KSR Bengaluru City Station: How to Use India's Busiest Confusing Railway Station

Two entrances, two sides, a metro station attached and a taxi scrum outside. A practical guide to arriving, departing and not missing your train at Bengaluru's main railway station.

QUICK ANSWER

  • KSR Bengaluru City (SBC), also called Majestic, is the city's main railway station, next to the Kempegowda bus stands and metro interchange.
  • Take the metro: Kempegowda station, where the Purple and Green Lines meet, connects directly and avoids Majestic's road traffic.
  • Check your ticket first, since long distance trains also leave from Yesvantpur, SMVT Bengaluru and Cantonment.
  • The two sides are a long walk apart, so arrive 45 minutes early for a reserved long distance train.

Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Bengaluru City railway station, known to everyone as City station or Majestic, next to the Kempegowda metro interchange.

“The single most common travel mistake in this city is arriving at the wrong side of City station forty minutes before a train. There are two entrances and they are not close together.”

• The reason this guide exists

Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Bengaluru City railway station, usually called KSR Bengaluru City or simply City station, is the main railway station in Bengaluru, in the Majestic area next to the Kempegowda bus stands and the Kempegowda metro interchange. It has two main entrances on opposite sides, direct metro connectivity, retiring rooms, cloak rooms, food courts and waiting halls, and it needs about twenty minutes more of your time than you think it does.

The station is the hub for most long distance trains out of Bengaluru, alongside Yesvantpur, SMVT Bengaluru at Baiyappanahalli and Cantonment. Which station your train leaves from is printed on your ticket and is the first thing to check, because the three are nowhere near each other and each has its own traffic problem.

What makes City station hard is not size. It is the combination of two sides, a bus terminus, a metro interchange and an auto rank all sharing one piece of ground in the densest part of the city. Once you understand the layout, it is one of the easiest big stations in India to use, because the metro delivers you straight into it.

This guide covers the entrances, the metro connection, platforms, facilities, food, getting an auto or cab without being fleeced, and what to do if you have hours to kill.

Which Entrance Should You Use?

The station has two main access sides, and they are a long walk apart with luggage. The side you want depends on your platform, so look at the platform number on the departure board or the app before you pick a drop off point, and tell your driver which side you need rather than just naming the station.

As a working rule, the main entrance facing the bus stands and metro serves the lower numbered platforms, and the second side serves the higher numbered ones. Both connect internally, but the internal route involves stairs, lifts, foot over bridges and a subway, and none of that is fast at six in the morning with two suitcases and a child.

If you are unsure, use the metro entrance and give yourself the extra fifteen minutes. That is the least risky version of this decision.

How Does the Metro Connection Work?

Kempegowda station, the interchange between the Purple and Green Lines, sits right beside the railway station, which makes City station reachable from most of Bengaluru without a road journey. From Whitefield, Indiranagar, Jayanagar, Malleshwaram or Rajajinagar, the metro is faster and more predictable than any cab at any hour.

This is the single most useful fact about travelling out of Bengaluru by train. The road approach to Majestic is among the worst in the city, and a cab that should take twenty five minutes can take an hour. The metro simply does not have that failure mode.

GOOD TO KNOW

Metro services do not run through the night, and many long distance trains leave very early or arrive very late. Check first and last train times before you rely on the metro for a 5 AM departure or a 1 AM arrival.

What Facilities Are at the Station?

What You Can Count On

  • Retiring rooms and dormitories. Bookable with a confirmed ticket, and the cheapest way to break a long journey in Bengaluru. Book well ahead.
  • Waiting halls. Separate upper class and general waiting areas. The upper class halls are calmer and usually cleaner.
  • Cloak room. For luggage, and your bags must be locked. Keep the receipt and note the closing time for collection.
  • Food courts and stalls. A reasonable spread, plus platform vendors. App based food delivery to your seat works on many trains from here.
  • ATMs, pharmacies and book stalls. All present near the main concourse areas.
  • Lifts, ramps and assistance. Available, though not always where you expect. Request wheelchair assistance in advance if you need it.
  • Charging points and Wi Fi. Both exist and both are unreliable at peak times. Carry a power bank.

How Do You Get an Auto or Cab Without a Fight?

Use the prepaid auto counter where available, or book through an app and walk to the designated pick up point rather than accepting a quote from whoever approaches you first. Freelance fares outside any Indian railway station are a negotiation you will lose while tired and carrying luggage.

The better answer, again, is the metro. If your destination is anywhere along the Purple or Green Lines, walk to Kempegowda station, take the train, and take an auto only for the last kilometre. It will be faster, cheaper and considerably less annoying.

Which Bengaluru Station Will Your Train Leave From?

Check your ticket, every time. Bengaluru has four main railway stations for long distance services and they are far apart, and assuming City station is a mistake thousands of travellers make every month.

The Four You Need to Know

  • KSR Bengaluru City, code SBC. The main station, in Majestic, with the metro interchange attached.
  • Yesvantpur Junction, code YPR. North west of the centre, with its own metro access on the Green Line side. Many long distance trains start here.
  • SMVT Bengaluru, Baiyappanahalli, code SMVB. The newer terminal in the east, and the right one for many trains towards the north and east.
  • Bengaluru Cantonment, code BNC. Central and small, and often the most convenient boarding point if you live in the middle of the city.
  • The rule. Allow an extra hour if you realise at the last minute you are at the wrong one. Bengaluru traffic does not forgive this error.

What Should You Do If You Have Hours to Kill?

Majestic is not a pleasant place to wait, but it is extremely well connected, which means a two hour gap does not have to be spent in a waiting hall. Everything below is close, and the metro makes each of them viable.

Within Twenty Minutes

  • Gandhi Nagar. The old cinema district next door, with single screen halls and one of the best cheap meals in the city.
  • Chickpet and KR Market. Two metro stops away, and the most intense wholesale shopping in Bengaluru. Not with luggage.
  • Bangalore Fort and Tipu's Summer Palace. Near KR Market, small, cheap and genuinely interesting for an hour.
  • Cubbon Park. Four stops east on the Purple Line, and the correct answer if you want to sit somewhere green.
  • Use the cloak room first. None of the above works while you are carrying bags. Deposit them, then go.

What Are the Practical Rules for Arriving and Departing?

The Short Version

  • Check the station name on your ticket. SBC, YPR, SMVB or BNC. This is the most important line on the ticket after the date.
  • Check your platform before choosing an entrance. The two sides are a long walk apart with luggage.
  • Come by metro if the timing allows. Road access to Majestic is the worst part of the journey.
  • Arrive forty five minutes early. Thirty if you know the station. Never fifteen.
  • Lock your bags. For the cloak room, and for overnight travel generally.
  • Carry water and a power bank. Both cost more inside and the charging points are usually taken.

Is the Station Worth Seeing as a Visitor?

Not as an attraction, and TripAdvisor's habit of listing railway stations among a city's sights is one of its stranger quirks. You come here because you have a train, not because you want to look at it.

That said, if you have an hour and an interest in how Bengaluru actually works, the Majestic block is instructive. A railway terminus, two bus terminuses, a metro interchange, the old cinema district and the wholesale market are all within a few hundred metres of each other, moving a scale of humanity that no mall or tech park comes close to. Look at it once, then get on your train.

“Check the station code, check the platform, take the metro, arrive early. Four rules and this station stops being difficult.”
