How to Find Services in Bangalore Without Getting Fleeced

The plumber who does not come back. The mover who renegotiates at your doorstep. The quote that doubles at the invoice. Here is how this city actually works, and what things should cost.

QUICK ANSWER

  • Ask for a written, itemised quote after a physical inspection; it filters out most bad providers.
  • Pay an advance of 30 to 50 percent for material-heavy work and the balance only after checking the job.
  • Use platforms for standard one-off jobs and direct providers for recurring, custom or expensive work.
  • Before any property purchase, pay a property lawyer to check title, the encumbrance certificate and khata.

A phone showing a home services app surrounded by plumbing fittings, a pipe wrench, an electrical tester, a hammer, a paint roller, colour swatches and a pest control sprayer

Nothing in this city tests your patience like a leaking tap and three unanswered calls.

“In Bengaluru, finding a good electrician is harder than finding a good apartment, and holding on to one is harder than both.”

• Everyone who has lived here two years

Bengaluru has excellent service providers. It also has an enormous number of people who will quote you a number on the phone, arrive with the wrong tools, and invoice you something entirely different. The difference between the two is almost never price, and it is almost always process. The good ones will inspect before quoting, put the quote in writing, and be reachable afterward. The bad ones will do exactly none of those three things.

This is the pillar guide to services in the city. It covers what things should cost, how to vet a provider in five minutes, the specific scams that recur here, and the order in which to sort your services out when you have just moved in. Every rate below is a realistic Bengaluru range as of 2026, not a national average, and not a best case.

I have used, argued with and eventually kept providers in most of these categories. The single most valuable thing in this article is not a price. It is the vetting checklist, because a provider you can trust in one category will usually refer you to one in another, and that referral chain is how long-term residents actually solve this.

Quick Information

Every service you will need, with what it should cost, in one table. Keep this open the next time somebody quotes you a number with confidence and no basis.

How Do I Vet a Service Provider in Bangalore in Five Minutes?

Ask for a written quote after a physical inspection, and see what happens. That single request eliminates most of the bad providers in the city before they ever reach your door, because the ones who intend to renegotiate on site cannot survive it.

  • Insist on inspection before quoting. For anything beyond a tap washer, a real provider wants to see the job. Anybody who quotes a firm price for unseen work is either guessing or planning to revise it.
  • Get it in writing, on WhatsApp. A message listing scope, materials, labour and total is a contract in practice. It also ends the argument at invoice time in about four seconds.
  • Ask what is not included. This is the most useful question in the entire process. Materials, transport, disposal, second visits and GST are the usual omissions.
  • Check how they handle a callback. Ask directly what happens if the problem recurs in a week. A good provider has an answer ready. A bad one changes the subject.
  • Verify identity for anyone entering your home. Company ID, a photo of it, and the name registered against the job. Standard practice with platforms, worth insisting on with individuals.
  • Advance, never full payment. 30 to 50 percent up front for material-heavy work, balance on completion. Never settle in full before the work is finished and checked.
  • Ask your building first. Your society's WhatsApp group, your watchman and your neighbours have already found the good ones. This is faster and more reliable than any search.
THE REFERRAL CHAIN

Once you find one genuinely good provider, ask them for a referral in a different category. Good tradespeople know other good tradespeople and their reputations are linked, so the recommendation is usually sound. This is how long-term Bengaluru residents quietly build a full contact list over a couple of years.

What Home Services Will I Need Most in Bangalore?

Plumbing, electrical, AC service, cleaning and pest control, roughly in that order of frequency. The city's water hardness, monsoon intensity and construction quality combine to make the first three recurring rather than occasional.

  • Plumbing. Bengaluru's water is hard in most areas, which wrecks taps, geysers and flush mechanisms faster than you expect. Budget for something plumbing-related once or twice a year and keep one plumber's number permanently.
  • Electrical. Frequent monsoon-season outages and older wiring in rented flats mean switchboard and fan issues are common. Insist on ISI-marked replacement parts, not whatever is in the van.
  • AC service. Service before summer, not during. From March onward every technician in the city is booked and the price rises accordingly. February is the correct month.
  • Deep cleaning. Worth doing at move-in and once a year after. Ask specifically whether bathroom descaling, kitchen degreasing and sofa or mattress cleaning are included, because they are usually priced separately.
  • Pest control. Cockroaches and ants are near-universal here, and monsoon makes both worse. General treatment with a warranty period is standard. Termite work is a different, more expensive job entirely.
  • Water purifier and geyser servicing. Both suffer from hard water. Annual maintenance contracts are usually better value than call-outs if you plan to stay put.
  • Carpentry. For fixes, repairs and small custom work. Per-day rates for repairs, per-square-foot for modular. Always confirm which basis you are on before work begins.

How Much Do Packers and Movers Cost in Bangalore, and How Do I Not Get Scammed?

A 2BHK move within Bengaluru costs roughly 6000 to 18000 rupees, and the scam is almost always the same one: a low phone quote, followed by a much higher number once your belongings are already on the truck. Defeat it with a physical survey and a written, itemised quote before moving day.

  • Demand a physical or video survey. No legitimate mover prices a full household without seeing it. This is the single step that prevents the doorstep renegotiation.
  • Get the quote itemised. Packing material, labour, transport, loading and unloading, floor charges, and GST as separate lines. Vague single-number quotes are where the extras hide.
  • Confirm floor and lift charges upfront. Bengaluru buildings frequently ban service lift use on certain days or hours, and manual carrying is charged per floor. Ask before, not after.
  • Check insurance properly. Transit insurance is usually optional and worth it for anything fragile or expensive. Ask what the declared value covers and what the deductible is.
  • Photograph everything valuable. Before packing. Time-stamped photos settle damage claims immediately, and their absence guarantees you lose the argument.
  • Never pay full in advance. A deposit is normal, full prepayment is not. Balance on delivery, after you have opened the boxes that matter.
  • Book off-peak if you can. Bengaluru's rental cycle means end of month, weekends and the March to June window are peak. Mid-month and mid-week moves are noticeably cheaper.

Which Professional Services Should I Line up in Bangalore?

A chartered accountant and, if you are buying property, a property lawyer. Those two are the ones where choosing badly costs you serious money rather than an afternoon.

  • Chartered accountant. For salaried filing, 1500 to 5000 is normal. For freelancers, consultants and anyone with foreign income or ESOPs, pay properly for someone who understands your situation. Bengaluru has a deep bench of CAs used to tech compensation, which is a genuine local advantage.
  • Property lawyer. Non-negotiable before any property purchase here. Title verification, encumbrance certificate, khata classification and approval checks. 5000 to 25000 for document verification and the best money you will spend on the transaction.
  • General legal. Rental agreements, employment issues, consumer disputes. Many Bengaluru lawyers offer fixed-fee document work, which is worth asking for instead of hourly.
  • Insurance advisor. Useful for health and term cover, but check whether they are advising or selling. A fee-only advisor is a different proposition from a commissioned agent.
  • Company compliance. If you are running anything registered, annual compliance from around 15000 upward. Bundle accounting, GST and filings with one firm rather than three.
  • Architects and interior designers. Design fees typically 5 to 10 percent of project value, or a per-square-foot rate. Always see completed projects in person, not just on Instagram.

What Are the Common Service Scams in Bangalore?

Four patterns account for nearly all of it: the revised quote, the phantom part, the unnecessary upsell and the disappearing warranty. Each one has a simple defence and all four defences are the same defence, which is writing things down.

  • The revised quote. Agreed on the phone, changed on site once you are committed. Defence: written quote after physical inspection, every time.
  • The phantom part. You are billed for a replacement component that was never replaced. Defence: ask for the old part back. Legitimate technicians hand it over without hesitation.
  • The unnecessary upsell. A minor fault presented as needing a full replacement. Defence: get a second opinion on anything over a few thousand rupees. It costs one call.
  • The disappearing warranty. Verbal assurances that evaporate when the problem recurs. Defence: warranty period and what it covers, in the written quote.
  • The unverified subcontractor. You book a company and an unrelated individual arrives. Defence: confirm the technician's name and ID against the booking before they start.
  • The cash-only insistence. Not always dishonest, but it removes your paper trail. Defence: pay digitally where possible and get a bill for anything substantial.

Should I Use Apps and Platforms or Find Providers Directly?

Use platforms for standardised, one-off, low-risk jobs, and find providers directly for anything recurring, custom or expensive. The trade-off is genuinely simple: platforms buy you accountability and speed, direct providers buy you a relationship and a better price.

Platforms are excellent for AC service, deep cleaning, pest control, salon-at-home and standard appliance repair, where the job is defined and the price is fixed. They are a poor fit for carpentry, renovation, interiors and anything needing judgement, because the person who arrives has no stake in the outcome beyond one rating. For those, find an individual through your building, use them repeatedly, pay them fairly and on time, and you will have solved the problem for years.

PAY PEOPLE PROPERLY

The most reliable way to keep a good provider in Bengaluru is not negotiating them down to the last hundred rupees. Pay the fair rate, pay on completion without delay, and be reachable. Good tradespeople here have more work than time, and they choose their clients too.

What Order Should I Sort Out Services in After Moving to Bangalore?

Utilities and water first, then cleaning and pest control, then the trades you will need repeatedly, then the professional services. Doing it in this order means you are never solving an urgent problem from scratch.

  • Week one. Electricity and water accounts in your name or confirmed with the owner, gas connection, internet, and a water tanker contact if your area needs one. Our civic services guide covers BESCOM, BWSSB and the city corporations that replaced BBMP properly.
  • Week one, also. Deep clean and pest control before you fully unpack. Doing it after is significantly worse and slightly pointless.
  • Week two. Find a plumber, an electrician and a carpenter through your building. Save all three. You will use them within two months, guaranteed.
  • Week two. Laundry or ironing, a milk and groceries arrangement, and a garbage segregation routine that matches your area's collection days.
  • Month one. AC service if the units came with the flat, water purifier servicing, and a geyser check before you need hot water urgently.
  • Month two. A CA if your taxes are anything other than a single salary, and health insurance if your employer's cover is thin. Our healthcare guide covers insurance in detail.
  • Ongoing. Add each good provider to a single note on your phone with name, trade and area. In three years that note is the most valuable document you own in this city.

What Can I Do If a Service Provider Cheats Me in Bangalore?

Escalate in writing first, then use the platform's complaint process, then consumer forum if the amount justifies it. Most disputes here end the moment you demonstrate you have documentation and are willing to be inconvenient about it.

  • Written complaint first. A clear WhatsApp or email setting out the agreed scope, the amount paid and the failure. Keep it factual. This resolves a surprising share of disputes on its own.
  • Platform escalation. If you booked through an app, their support and refund process is usually faster than anything else available and worth exhausting first.
  • Payment leverage. Withhold the balance, not the whole amount, and say why in writing. This is why never paying in full upfront matters so much.
  • Consumer forum. The National Consumer Helpline and the state consumer commission handle service disputes, and filing is inexpensive. Worth it for larger amounts, particularly interiors and moving damage.
  • Police, for genuine fraud. For impersonation, theft during a job or clear criminal deception, this is a police matter and not a consumer one. Bengaluru City Police accept complaints online.

Services in Bangalore: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a trustworthy plumber or electrician in Bangalore?

Ask your building's residents group, watchman or neighbours first, because they have already filtered the local options. Then insist on a written quote after a physical inspection, ask what is not included, and never pay the full amount before the work is finished.

How much does a plumber cost in Bangalore?

A basic visit runs 300 to 600 rupees plus parts, with common tap, flush or geyser repairs landing between 400 and 1200 rupees. Bengaluru's hard water means plumbing issues recur, so it is worth keeping one reliable plumber long term.

How much do packers and movers cost in Bangalore?

Around 6000 to 18000 rupees for a 2BHK move within the city, and 18000 to 60000 for an intercity move, depending on distance, floor, packing and insurance. Always get a physical or video survey and an itemised written quote first.

What does deep cleaning cost in Bangalore?

Roughly 3500 to 9000 rupees for a 2BHK depending on scope. Confirm whether bathroom descaling, kitchen degreasing and sofa or mattress cleaning are included, because these are commonly quoted separately.

When should I get my AC serviced in Bangalore?

February, before the summer rush. From March onward technicians are heavily booked and prices rise. A standard service costs 600 to 900 rupees a unit and a gas refill 2000 to 3500.

Are service apps better than finding providers directly in Bangalore?

Apps are better for standardised one-off jobs like AC service, deep cleaning and pest control, where price and scope are fixed. For carpentry, renovation, interiors and anything recurring, a direct provider found through your building is cheaper and better.

Do I need a lawyer to buy property in Bangalore?

Yes. Independent title and document verification costs 5000 to 25000 rupees and covers the encumbrance certificate, khata classification and approvals. It is the cheapest insurance available on a property transaction here.

How much does a CA charge in Bangalore?

Individual tax filing runs 1500 to 5000 rupees, more for freelancers, ESOPs or foreign income. Company compliance typically starts around 15000 rupees a year. Bengaluru has many CAs experienced with tech compensation structures.

What is the most common service scam in Bangalore?

The revised quote: a low price agreed on the phone, then increased once the technician is on site or your belongings are on the truck. A written quote issued after a physical inspection prevents almost all of it.

What should I do if a service provider damages something?

Photograph the damage immediately, complain in writing with the agreed scope and amount, withhold the outstanding balance rather than the whole payment, and escalate through the platform if you booked via an app. For larger amounts, the consumer forum is inexpensive and effective.

How much should I pay as an advance for service work in Bangalore?

30 to 50 percent for material-heavy work like painting, carpentry or interiors, with the balance on completion. For small repairs, pay on completion only. Full prepayment is never necessary.
