“The Passport Seva Kendra appointment is the part everybody worries about and the part that goes fine. The police verification is the part nobody plans for.”
• On where the time actually goes
Bengaluru's passport system works considerably better than its reputation suggests. The Passport Seva Kendras are organised, the appointment system functions, and the process inside the building is genuinely efficient. The friction is elsewhere: getting an appointment slot at a convenient centre, assembling a document set that survives scrutiny, and the police verification that follows.
The city is served by Passport Seva Kendras run under the Ministry of External Affairs along with Post Office Passport Seva Kendras, and which one you can book depends on slot availability rather than on preference. Slots at the popular centres go quickly, and slot release patterns are the single most useful thing to understand about this process.
This guide covers the whole thing: normal versus Tatkaal, the documents, booking, what happens at the centre, police verification, timelines, renewals and the common reasons applications get held up. Fees and procedures are revised periodically, so verify on the official Passport Seva site before applying.

Where Are the Passport Seva Kendras in Bengaluru?
The city is served by Passport Seva Kendras along with Post Office Passport Seva Kendras spread across it. The portal lists the current centres and shows which ones have slots.
Do not fix on a particular centre. Slot availability decides where you go far more than preference does, and a slot at a less convenient centre next week beats a perfect slot at your preferred one in six weeks. The centres run the same process, and the experience inside is broadly comparable.
Post Office Passport Seva Kendras have expanded the network considerably and are often less congested. If you are flexible about location, widen your search before assuming there are no slots.
How Do I Actually Get an Appointment Slot?
Register on the portal, fill the application, pay, and then book. Slots are released in batches, and understanding the release pattern is most of the battle.
- 1. Register and fill the application first. You cannot book a slot until the application is submitted and paid for, so do this in advance of when you want to travel rather than in the same session as the booking attempt.
- 2. Learn the release schedule. Slots are released at set times on set days rather than trickling out continuously. The portal states the current arrangement, and it changes from time to time.
- 3. Be ready at the release time. Logged in, application paid, page open. Popular centres clear within minutes.
- 4. Widen the location filter. Include Post Office centres and centres slightly further out. This is where most available slots actually are.
- 5. Take an inconvenient slot. An early morning appointment across town is a morning. Waiting a month for a better one is a month.
- 6. Use the app as well as the site. mPassport Seva sometimes surfaces availability more responsively than the browser.
- 7. Check for cancellations. Slots reappear as people reschedule, so it is worth looking at odd times rather than only at release.
“Fill and pay for the application days before you try to book. The people who get the good slots are the ones who only have to click once.”

Normal or Tatkaal, Which Should I Choose?
Normal unless you genuinely need speed. Tatkaal costs substantially more, has additional documentary requirements, and is not available for every category of application.
- Normal is fine for most people. If your travel is more than a couple of months away, the ordinary scheme will almost certainly get there, and the fee difference is meaningful.
- Tatkaal is for genuine urgency. A confirmed travel requirement, a job abroad, a medical situation. It is faster because verification is arranged differently, not because the rules are looser.
- Tatkaal has extra documentary requirements. Including in many cases a verification certificate in a prescribed format. Read the requirement carefully before choosing it, since an incomplete Tatkaal application is worse than a normal one.
- Not everything is eligible for Tatkaal. Certain categories of application are excluded. Check before paying the higher fee.
- Tatkaal does not skip police verification. It changes when and how it happens rather than removing it. Adverse findings still matter.
- Slot availability applies either way. Tatkaal slots are also limited, so the higher fee does not guarantee an early appointment.
What Documents Do I Need?
Proof of address, proof of date of birth, Aadhaar, and for a reissue the old passport. The portal has a document advisor that generates the exact list for your situation, and it is worth using.
- Proof of present address. The most scrutinised document in the set. It must support the address you have entered, and that address is where police verification will go. A registered rental agreement, utility bill, bank statement or Aadhaar are commonly accepted.
- Proof of date of birth. Birth certificate, school leaving certificate or other accepted document. It must agree with what you have entered and ideally with Aadhaar.
- Aadhaar. Central to the process. An Aadhaar showing a different address from your application is a predictable source of friction.
- Old passport, for reissue. Original, plus copies of the first and last pages and any observation pages.
- Annexures, where applicable. Prescribed formats exist for specific situations such as minors, certain name changes and government employees. Download them from the portal rather than using a version found elsewhere.
- Documents for minors. Both parents' passports or identity documents, and the prescribed annexure. Requirements differ where one parent is not consenting or not contactable.
- Originals and self attested copies. Carry both to the appointment. The centre checks the originals and retains copies.
What Happens at the Passport Seva Kendra?
Three counters in sequence: document scanning and biometrics, verification by a verification officer, and a final granting counter. Allow around an hour to ninety minutes inside.
Arrive with time in hand but not absurdly early, since entry is managed by appointment time. Carry the appointment receipt, the originals and the self attested copies in the order the document advisor listed them, because an organised file genuinely moves faster through the counters.
At the final counter you will be told the outcome: granted, or held for some reason. If something is missing, ask precisely what and whether it can be submitted subsequently or requires a fresh appointment. Getting that answer clearly, at the counter, saves a great deal of guesswork afterwards.
How Does Police Verification Work for a Passport?
It is triggered automatically as part of the process, with the local police verifying your identity and residence at the address you gave and reporting back to the passport office. It is the main determinant of your timeline.
Verification may happen after the appointment, before it in some cases, and for certain reissues it may not be required at all. You do not choose. What you can control is being reachable and being at the address, since an officer who cannot find you is the commonest reason a file sits.
Expect a call or a visit from the station covering your address. Have your originals available, and be prepared for the officer to ask a neighbour or the building security about you, which is a normal part of residence verification rather than anything sinister.
“Be at the address you gave, answer the phone, and tell your building security that somebody may ask about you. Most passport delays are solved by those three things.”
• On the verification stage
What Slows Applications Down Most?
- Multiple recent addresses. Each may need verification, sometimes in different jurisdictions, and the file waits for the slowest. People who have moved frequently should expect a longer process and should declare every address honestly.
- An address proof that does not match. The single most common documentary problem. The proof must support the address you entered, and the address you entered is where verification will go.
- Being unreachable. Unanswered calls and an empty flat. Entirely avoidable and remarkably common.
- Name mismatches. Between Aadhaar, the birth or school certificate and the application. The same problem that breaks every other document process.
- Missing annexures. Particularly for minors and for name change cases. Use the prescribed format from the portal.
- Pending matters on record. Anything adverse found during verification will need addressing, and this is a situation to take legal advice on rather than to improvise.
What About Renewals and Children's Passports?
A renewal is applied for as a reissue through the same process, and it can sometimes avoid fresh police verification. Children's passports have shorter validity and their own documentary requirements.
Apply for a reissue well before expiry, since many countries require a period of remaining validity on entry and some visa processes require considerably more. A passport that technically has four months left is effectively expired for a lot of travel purposes.
For minors, both parents' involvement is generally expected and prescribed annexures apply. Where one parent is not available or not consenting, there are specific provisions and specific annexures, and reading them properly before the appointment is essential because the counter will not improvise.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a passport appointment in Bangalore when there are no slots?
Fill and pay for the application in advance so you only have to click once, learn the current slot release schedule on the portal and be logged in when slots are released, and widen your location filter to include Post Office Passport Seva Kendras and centres further out. Slots also reappear as people reschedule, so it is worth checking at odd times.
How long does a passport take in Bangalore?
Commonly a few weeks under the normal scheme, with the timeline driven mainly by police verification rather than by the passport office. Applications with a single stable address and a reachable applicant move considerably faster than those with several recent addresses across different jurisdictions.
Is Tatkaal worth the extra fee?
Only if you have genuine urgency such as confirmed travel, a job abroad or a medical situation. It is substantially more expensive, carries additional documentary requirements including in many cases a verification certificate in a prescribed format, is not available for all categories, and does not remove police verification. If your travel is months away, the normal scheme is almost certainly sufficient.
Does Tatkaal skip police verification?
No. It changes how and when verification is arranged rather than removing it, and anything adverse found still matters. The speed comes from the sequencing, not from a lighter check.
What is the most common reason passport applications get delayed?
Police verification, and within that, applicants who cannot be reached or who no longer live at the address given. The second most common is an address proof that does not properly support the address entered on the application. Both are avoidable before you ever book a slot.
Which documents do I need for a passport?
Proof of present address, proof of date of birth, Aadhaar, and the old passport for a reissue, with prescribed annexures for specific situations such as minors and certain name changes. Use the document advisor on the Passport Seva portal, which generates the exact list for your circumstances, and carry originals plus self attested copies.
How long is an Indian passport valid?
Commonly ten years for adults, with shorter validity for minors, typically five years or until the child turns eighteen. Apply for a reissue well before expiry, because many countries require a period of remaining validity on entry and some visa processes require considerably more than a few months.
Do both parents need to be present for a child's passport?
Both parents' involvement is generally expected and prescribed annexures apply. Where one parent is unavailable or not consenting, there are specific provisions and specific annexures covering those situations, and you should read them properly before the appointment since the counter works from the prescribed formats.

Use only official channels. There is a large and persistent industry of agent sites charging for appointment booking, which is free.
Verification Stuck or Application on Hold?
