A deadline in February that most business owners remember in April, by which point the penalty has reached the full licence fee.

“Miss February and the trade licence costs a quarter more. Miss March too and you pay the fee twice. That is the detail that turns a forgotten renewal into a genuinely annoying bill.”

• On why this deadline deserves a reminder

Trade licences in Bengaluru are renewed every year in a February window. For 2026-27, the Greater Bengaluru Authority's circular opened renewals on February 1, with no penalty until February 28, a 25 percent penalty for renewals in March, and a 100 percent penalty, equal to the licence fee, from April 1.

That stepped structure is what makes this deadline different from property tax, where the penalty is monthly. A licence forgotten until April costs double, and the amount is not trivial for a small business.

Administration now sits with the five city corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority, which replaced BBMP with the handover completed on 2 September 2025. This guide covers the deadline, the fee position, documents, the multi year option and what happens if you have let a licence lapse entirely. Our application guide covers first time applicants.

When Is the Trade Licence Renewal Deadline?

For 2026-27 the renewal window ran from February 1 to February 28 without penalty. Renewals in March attract a 25 percent penalty, and from April 1 the penalty is 100 percent of the licence fee.

The practical consequence is worth spelling out. A business that renews on 15 March pays a quarter more than it needed to. One that remembers in May pays the fee twice over. For a small shop that is a meaningful sum, and it buys nothing.

Because the deadline sits early in the calendar year, it tends to fall in a period when small business owners are attending to other year end and financial year matters. The single most effective fix is a calendar reminder for February 1, which puts the renewal at the start of the window rather than at the end of it. Confirm the exact current year date with your corporation, since dates have been adjusted in some years.

“Renew in the first week of the window, not the last. Portal congestion at the end of February is real and it is not a defence against the penalty.”

• On timing within the window

What Documents Do I Need for Renewal?

  • The existing trade licence. Your current licence with its number, which the system uses to locate the record. Keep a digital copy rather than relying on a printed one in a drawer.
  • Proof of premises. Current rental agreement or ownership documents. If your lease has been renewed since the last licence renewal, supply the current agreement.
  • Property tax receipt for the premises. Demonstrating the premises is assessed and tax is current. A landlord's arrears become your obstacle here, as with a new application.
  • Current sector approvals. For food businesses, a valid FSSAI registration or licence. An expired FSSAI is one of the most common reasons a food business renewal stalls.
  • Fire safety and pollution consents. Where applicable to your category, and current rather than expired. These have their own renewal cycles which are easy to lose track of.
  • Identity and business documents. As required, particularly where there has been any change in ownership or constitution since the last renewal.
  • Declaration of changes. If your activity, premises area or ownership has changed, declare it at renewal. Renewing on the old basis when circumstances have changed creates a mismatch that surfaces at inspection.

What Is the Renewal Process?

Log in to your corporation's portal, locate the existing licence, confirm or update the business details, upload current documents, pay the computed fee and download the renewed licence.

  • 1. Confirm your corporation. Under the five corporation structure, renewals go to the corporation covering your premises. Confirm which of North, South, East, West or Central that is before starting.
  • 2. Check your sector approvals are current. FSSAI, fire and pollution consents as applicable. Renew those first if any have lapsed, since the trade licence renewal will expect them.
  • 3. Clear any property tax arrears on the premises. Both yours and, where relevant, the landlord's. This is a routine blocker and it is better identified in January than in late February.
  • 4. Log in and locate the licence. On the corporation portal under Our Services and Trade Licence, using your mobile number and OTP and the existing licence number.
  • 5. Confirm or update the details. Business name, category, activity, premises and area. Declare anything that has changed rather than carrying forward last year's entry unchanged.
  • 6. Upload the current documents. Within the format and size limits, commonly JPG or PDF under 1 MB per file. Prepare these in advance.
  • 7. Pay the computed renewal fee. Calculated by category and area. Payment by UPI, card or net banking, and the receipt should be saved immediately.
  • 8. Download the renewed licence. And keep it accessible. Inspections happen, and a licence you cannot produce is functionally the same as one you do not hold.

Is the Multi Year Option Worth It?

If you expect to stay in the same premises with the same activity, generally yes. It raises the upfront cost and removes the annual renewal exercise and the risk of missing a deadline.

Multi year validity is available in some categories, with options extending to several years. The arithmetic is simple: you pay more now and avoid both the administrative exercise and the late penalty risk each year. For a stable business in a long lease, that is usually a good trade.

It is less attractive if you might move premises, change your activity, or close within the period, since the licence attaches to a specific activity at a specific address. Ask your corporation what multi year options exist for your category and what happens if circumstances change mid term, and weigh it against how reliably you expect to remember a February deadline every year.

What If My Licence Has Lapsed Completely?

Speak to your corporation. Expect accumulated penalties, and in some cases a requirement to apply afresh rather than renew. Operating without a valid licence is an offence, so resolve it rather than waiting.

A licence lapsed by a few weeks is a renewal with a penalty. One lapsed by a year or more may be treated as requiring a fresh application, with the inspection and timeline that involves, and the business has been trading without valid permission in the interim. That is a compliance exposure rather than merely an administrative one.

The practical approach is to go to the corporation with the old licence, the current premises documents, current sector approvals and the property tax position, explain the position and ask what route applies. Where an inspection or enforcement notice has already been issued, take professional advice, and our business services guide covers finding a compliance consultant. Any offer to make an enforcement notice disappear for a payment should be refused.

Trade Licence Renewal: Frequently Asked Questions

When is the trade licence renewal deadline in Bangalore?

For 2026-27 the window opened on February 1 and ran penalty free until February 28, under a Greater Bengaluru Authority circular. Renewals in March pay a 25 percent penalty and renewals from April 1 pay 100 percent. Confirm each year's dates with your city corporation.

What is the penalty for late trade licence renewal?

Under the 2026-27 circular it is stepped: 25 percent of the licence fee for renewals between March 1 and March 31, and 100 percent, equal to the fee itself, from April 1.

How do I renew my trade licence online?

Log in to your city corporation's portal under Our Services and Trade Licence using your mobile number and an OTP, locate the existing licence, confirm or update the business details, upload current documents, pay the computed fee and download the renewed licence.

What documents are needed for trade licence renewal?

The existing licence, current proof of premises, a property tax receipt for the premises, current sector approvals such as FSSAI for food businesses, fire and pollution consents where applicable, and identity or business documents where anything has changed.

Why is my food business renewal blocked?

An expired FSSAI registration or licence is one of the most common causes. The trade licence renewal expects current sector approvals, so renew FSSAI first. Property tax arrears on the premises are the other frequent blocker.

Can I get a multi year trade licence in Bangalore?

Multi year validity is available in some categories, raising the upfront cost while removing the annual renewal exercise and the risk of missing a February deadline. It suits a stable business in a long lease and less so one that may move or change activity.

What happens if my trade licence has lapsed for a year?

Expect accumulated penalties and, in some cases, a requirement to apply afresh rather than renew, with the inspection and timeline that involves. Operating without a valid licence is an offence, so approach your corporation rather than waiting.

Do I need to declare changes at renewal?

Yes. Changes in activity, premises area or ownership should be declared at renewal rather than carried forward on the old basis, since a mismatch between the licence and the actual business surfaces at inspection.

Which corporation handles my renewal now?

The city corporation covering your premises under the Greater Bengaluru Authority, which replaced BBMP with the handover completed on 2 September 2025. The five corporations cover North, South, East, West and Central Bengaluru.

Can I renew at a corporation office instead of online?

Renewal is available through corporation offices and Seva Sindhu channels as well as the portal. The online route is generally faster, and going in person is most useful where a record problem needs resolving in conversation.
