Renew on time and it costs about Rs 400 and fifteen minutes on your phone. Wait too long and it costs a late fee, an RTO visit and possibly a driving test. Here is the whole process, sorted.

QUICK ANSWER

  • Expired for more than a year? Expect an RTO visit and possibly a retest.

Driving licence renewal in Bangalore: a Bengaluru motorist renewing his DL online on the Parivahan Sarathi portal with a smartphone

Renewing a driving licence in Bengaluru now starts on the Parivahan Sarathi portal, with Aadhaar authentication and the smart card sent by post.

“A driving licence is the only government document that quietly expires while you are busy using it every single day.”

• Tariq Sallam, on the card in your wallet you have not looked at since 2006

Here is a Bengaluru rite of passage nobody warns you about: discovering your driving licence expired three weeks ago, courtesy of a traffic constable near Silk Board who happens to be having a slow afternoon. That is the thing about a DL. It sits in your wallet doing nothing, until the one day it decides to be the most important card you own.

The good news is that renewing a driving licence in Bengaluru in 2026 is far less painful than its reputation. Most of it now happens online on the Parivahan Sarathi portal, the fee for an on-time renewal is a few hundred rupees, and if you are under 40 with a clean record you may not need to set foot in an RTO at all. The bad news is that the rules punish procrastinators properly, and a licence left expired for more than a year turns a ten-minute job into a retest.

In this guide I walk you through exactly how to renew a driving licence in Bangalore: the online route, when you still need an RTO visit, the real fees, who needs a medical certificate, which Bengaluru RTO is yours, and what has actually changed recently. Read it once, set a calendar reminder, and never meet that Silk Board constable on his terms again.

Renewing on time costs about as much as two plates of masala dosa and a filter coffee. Renewing late costs about as much as a weekend in Coorg. Choose wisely.

Can I Renew My Driving Licence Online in Bangalore?

Yes. For most Bengalureans the entire renewal starts, and often ends, on the Parivahan Sarathi portal, with Aadhaar-based authentication, online fee payment and the new card posted to your address.

Karnataka runs its licence services on the national Sarathi system, which means the process looks the same whether you live in Whitefield or Basavanagudi. You pick Karnataka as the state, choose the renewal service, enter your licence number and date of birth, and the portal pulls up your record. If your details match your Aadhaar, you can usually complete the contactless version of the service without booking an RTO slot.

Where it gets less contactless: if your Aadhaar details do not match your licence, if your photo is very old, if you are changing your address at the same time, or if the licence has been expired for a long while, the system will push you to an RTO appointment for documents and biometrics. Recent reporting also points to stricter face matching for people renewing after many years, so a 2005 photo of you with a full head of hair may not carry the day.

How Do I Renew My Driving Licence Online, Step by Step?

It takes about 15 minutes if your documents are ready. Here is the sequence I recommend, in order.

  • 1. Check your expiry date first. It is printed on the card, and also visible in DigiLocker or the mParivahan app. If you are within a year of expiry, you can apply now.
  • 2. Open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select Karnataka. Go to Driving Licence services and choose renewal of DL. Avoid lookalike sites that charge a 'service fee' for the same form.
  • 3. Enter your DL number and date of birth. Confirm the record that appears is yours. If the portal cannot find an older paper licence, it may need to be backlogged into the system at your RTO first.
  • 4. Choose Aadhaar authentication where offered. Enter your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your linked mobile. This is what lets you skip the counter in many cases.
  • 5. Fill in the form and the medical declaration. Form 1 is a self-declaration of fitness. If you are 40 or older, upload Form 1A signed by a registered medical practitioner.
  • 6. Upload photo, signature and documents. Follow the size limits on screen. A recent photo on a plain light background saves you a rejection.
  • 7. Pay the fee online. UPI, card or net banking. The portal shows the exact breakdown before you pay, so check it against the numbers below.
  • 8. Save the acknowledgement and track it. Use Application Status on the Sarathi site with your application number. Keep the receipt with your old licence while you wait.
GOOD TO KNOW

Do not pay an agent Rs 2,000 for something that costs Rs 400 and a quarter of an hour. If you genuinely need help, Bangalore One and Karnataka One centres, and the RTO help desks, can assist at nominal charges.

How Much Does Driving Licence Renewal Cost in Karnataka?

About Rs 400 if you renew on time: Rs 200 for renewal plus Rs 200 for the smart card, as per the central fee schedule under Rule 32 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.

Renew after the grace period and the maths changes sharply. The central schedule adds Rs 300 plus Rs 1,000 for every year or part of a year of delay, on top of the card fee. So a licence that lapsed 13 months ago is charged for two years of delay, not one. Some websites quote different numbers for Karnataka, so treat the figure the portal shows you at payment as final.

  • On time (before expiry or within grace): Roughly Rs 400 including the smart card.
  • Late, under one year past grace: Roughly Rs 1,500 including the card.
  • Late, more than one year: Another Rs 1,000 for each extra year or part of a year, plus a possible test fee.
  • Medical certificate: Your doctor's consultation charge, which varies. Many clinics near RTOs issue Form 1A quickly.
  • Driving with an expired licence: Under the amended Motor Vehicles Act, driving without a valid licence can attract a fine of up to Rs 5,000. That is the costliest option on this list.

“Renewing on time is the only bit of Bengaluru bureaucracy where being early is actually rewarded.”

Who Needs a Medical Certificate for DL Renewal?

Anyone aged 40 or above, and anyone renewing a transport (commercial) licence, needs Form 1A, a medical certificate signed by a registered doctor. Under 40 with a private licence, the Form 1 self-declaration is usually enough.

Form 1A is a simple examination: eyesight, hearing, reflexes and a general fitness check. Download the current format from the Sarathi portal and have the doctor fill and sign it with their registration number. Certificates written on a clinic letterhead instead of the official form are a classic reason for rejection.

After 50, the validity of a renewed private licence drops to five years at a time, so you will be doing this more often. Think of Form 1A as a free reminder to get your eyes checked, which, given Bengaluru's night-time traffic and the enthusiasm of high-beam drivers on the Outer Ring Road, is not the worst idea.

How Long Is a Renewed Driving Licence Valid?

It depends on your age. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, a private (non-transport) licence issued before 30 is valid until 40; issued between 30 and 50, it runs for ten years; between 50 and 55, until 60; and after 55, for five years at a time.

  • Under 30 at issue: Valid until you turn 40.
  • Aged 30 to 50: Ten years from the date of issue or renewal.
  • Aged 50 to 55: Valid until you turn 60.
  • Above 55: Five years each time.
  • Transport licences: Five years at a time, with a medical every renewal.

Check your own card rather than trusting the table, because older licences and backlog entries sometimes carry different dates.

What Happens If My Driving Licence Has Already Expired?

You still get 30 days after the expiry date during which the licence remains effective. After that you are driving without a valid licence, and the longer you wait, the more it costs and the harder it gets.

  • Expired, less than a year: Renew online as usual, but pay the late fee. Usually no test.
  • Expired, more than a year: Online renewal is often blocked. You will be routed to the RTO, and the licensing authority can ask you to pass a driving test again before renewing.
  • Expired for many years: Expect to be treated close to a fresh applicant. Some guides still mention a five-year rule from the older law; the 2019 amendment tightened it to one year, so do not rely on old advice.
  • Lost and expired at the same time: Apply for a duplicate and renewal together, with a police complaint or online lost-document report as supporting proof.

If you have to take the test, note that Bengaluru has been moving to sensor-based automated driving test tracks, starting at Mallathahalli near Jnanabharathi. They do not care how many years you have driven. Practise your figure of eight.

Which Bengaluru RTO Handles My Driving Licence?

The RTO that covers your current residential address. The portal assigns it based on what you enter, so get your address right, and if you have moved, update it during renewal with fresh proof.

  • KA-01 Koramangala (Bangalore Central): BDA Complex area, Koramangala.
  • KA-02 Rajajinagar (Bangalore West): Rajajinagar, Malleswaram side.
  • KA-03 Indiranagar / Kasturi Nagar (Bangalore East): Outer Ring Road near NGEF.
  • KA-04 Yeshwanthpur (Bangalore North): Yeshwanthpur and surroundings.
  • KA-05 Jayanagar (Bangalore South): Jayanagar 4th T Block, above the BMTC bus stand.
  • KA-41 Jnanabharathi: Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Kengeri side.
  • KA-50 Yelahanka, KA-51 Electronic City, KA-53 KR Puram: The newer offices serving the north, south and east peripheries.

These are commonly listed locations; jurisdictions are reorganised from time to time, so confirm yours on the Karnataka Transport Department site or the Sarathi portal before you travel across town.

What Has Changed in Driving Licence Renewal Recently?

Three things matter for Bengaluru drivers: more of the process is contactless through Aadhaar, identity checks are getting stricter, and Karnataka has upgraded the physical card itself.

  • Aadhaar-based contactless renewal: Where your Aadhaar and licence details match, you can complete renewal online without a counter visit.
  • Stricter face and document matching: National reporting in 2026 describes digital face verification for people renewing after a long gap, comparing your face to the licence photo.
  • New Karnataka smart cards: The state has launched polycarbonate, laser-engraved DL and RC cards with a microchip and a QR code, printed centrally and posted out.
  • Digital copies count: A DL in DigiLocker or mParivahan is accepted as valid proof, which helps while your new card is in the post.
GOOD TO KNOW

Tip: once your renewal is approved, delete the old licence from DigiLocker's issued documents and fetch it again after a few days. Otherwise DigiLocker can keep showing the old expiry date and you will have an awkward conversation at a checkpoint.

You can apply up to one year before the expiry date. Applying early does not shorten your validity, so there is no reason to wait.

The licence stays effective for 30 days after expiry. After that you are driving without a valid licence and late fees apply when you renew.

Do I need Form 1A for DL renewal?

Yes if you are 40 or older or hold a transport licence. It must be on the official format and signed by a registered medical practitioner. Under 40 with a private licence, Form 1 self-declaration is usually enough.

Online renewal is usually not available. Visit your RTO; the licensing authority can require you to pass a driving test again before it renews the licence, and late fees apply.

How long does DL renewal take in Bangalore?

Commonly 7 to 15 working days after approval, with the smart card sent by Speed Post. You can use the digital licence in DigiLocker or mParivahan in the meantime.

Can I renew my Karnataka licence if I have moved to another area of Bangalore?

Yes. Update your address during the renewal with fresh proof, and the application will go to the RTO that covers your new address.
