  • The fee is about Rs 15 and shows on the payment page; note the RD number to track the application.

Fifteen rupees, no office visit, and a digitally signed PDF at the end. Provided the documents hold up.

“The whole thing is online now and it costs about fifteen rupees. What decides whether it works is the supporting proof you upload and whether your mobile number is Aadhaar linked.”

• On where applications actually fail

Karnataka's Revenue Department moved certificate applications online under the Atalji Janasnehi Kendra project, which is what the Nadakacheri portal is. Before it existed, a caste, income or residence certificate meant a physical visit to a Taluk or Tahsildar office, frequently more than once.

Now you apply with your Aadhaar number and a mobile OTP, upload the documents on the portal, and track progress with an RD number generated on submission. The current version is referred to as Nadakacheri 5.0 or NK5, and no separate account registration is needed: the Aadhaar linked mobile number is the login.

This guide covers the full process for a caste certificate: eligibility, documents, the application steps, fees, verification, timelines and download. Our students guide covers why it matters for admissions and scholarships, and our rejections guide covers what to do when an application fails.

What Do I Need Before Applying?

An Aadhaar linked mobile number, Aadhaar itself, and documentary proof of the caste claim. The supporting proof is what the application turns on.

  • Aadhaar, and a linked mobile number. The login is the Aadhaar linked mobile plus an OTP. If the OTP does not arrive, the usual cause is that the number is not linked to Aadhaar, so check that before assuming a portal fault.
  • Ration card showing caste. One of the most commonly used supporting documents, since it records household composition and caste details.
  • A parent's caste certificate. Where a parent holds one, it is strong evidence for the claim and is routinely relied on. Have the RD number or a clear scan available.
  • School records. Transfer certificates and school records frequently carry caste entries and are accepted as supporting proof.
  • A report from the local authority. A Sarpanch or equivalent local authority report is commonly used, particularly where documentary history is thin.
  • Address proof. Establishing residence in Karnataka and the jurisdiction for the application.
  • Clear scans within the portal limits. Illegible or oversized uploads cause rejections. Prepare them before you begin rather than mid application.
  • Know your category precisely. SC, ST, OBC or the relevant category, and the exact caste name as it appears in official records. A mismatch with your documents is a common rejection reason.

“Keep the phone answerable. An inactive mobile number where the officer could not reach you is a stated reason applications get rejected, and it is entirely avoidable.”

• On the least excusable failure

What Are the Application Steps?

Open the portal, log in with your Aadhaar linked mobile and OTP, start a new request, select the caste certificate service, complete the details, upload documents, pay and note the RD number.

  • 1. Open the official portal. At nadakacheri.karnataka.gov.in. Use the official address rather than a search result, since several unofficial guide sites rank alongside it and are not the application portal.
  • 2. Go to Online Application, then Apply Online. From the top menu. Select your language, Kannada or English, at this point.
  • 3. Log in with your mobile number. Enter the registered mobile number and proceed, then enter the OTP. If the OTP does not arrive, wait thirty seconds and use Resend, then check whether the number is Aadhaar linked.
  • 4. Start a New Request. From the dashboard, select New Request and then the caste certificate service. Caste and income are separate applications with separate RD numbers.
  • 5. Complete the application details. Applicant details, category, caste as it appears in official records, and the purpose for which the certificate is required.
  • 6. Upload the supporting documents. Aadhaar, ration card, parent's certificate, school records or local authority report as applicable. Clear scans within the portal's limits.
  • 7. Pay the fee. The exact amount shows on the payment page before you pay, and UPI or QR code payment is accepted. The fee is commonly cited at around Rs 15.
  • 8. Save the RD number. Generated on successful submission and sent by SMS. This is what you use to track status, download and later reprint. Save it somewhere you will find it.

How Long Does It Take and How Do I Track It?

Track it on the portal using the RD number, under Application Status. Timelines vary by Taluk and by whether verification raises questions, and a week is a commonly reported outcome.

The status page shows an Action Taken On date, which is the useful field. Where an application has sat without movement well beyond the expected period, that date is what you cite when following up, and it gives you something concrete to reference rather than a general complaint about delay.

For long delays, the practical route is to visit the district or Taluk office with your application number. Nadakacheri and AJSK centres are open Monday to Saturday from 10 AM to 5.30 PM and closed on Sundays and Karnataka government holidays. The helpline numbers are 080 4455 4455 and the toll free 1800 425 1243, and Sakala covers service delivery timelines for registered complaints.

How Do I Download or Reprint the Certificate?

Through the Print Certificate section on the portal, using your RD number. The downloaded PDF is digitally signed and legally valid with no physical signature required.

  • Go to the Print Certificate section. On the Nadakacheri portal, enter your RD number and submit to download the digitally signed PDF.
  • Disable the pop up blocker first. A specific and commonly reported obstacle. The print action opens a new window, and a blocker will silently prevent it.
  • Use a desktop or laptop. The process is reported as easier on a computer than on a mobile, particularly for the print and download steps.
  • The PDF is legally valid as issued. Digitally signed certificates from Nadakacheri are legally recognised for government services, scholarships, admissions and official submissions in Karnataka.
  • Reprints cost Rs 40. Through the Reprint option under the Print menu, using your RD number, payable by SBI e-Pay, UPI or card. Worth knowing before you lose the file.
  • Keep the RD number permanently. It is how you reprint years later. Save it with your other important documents rather than relying on an old SMS.
  • Verify authenticity where needed. Certificates can be verified using the RD number, which is how institutions confirm a submitted certificate is genuine.

How Long Is a Caste Certificate Valid?

For Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe certificates, for life, with no expiry. Other categories may require renewal depending on the type and the purpose it is being used for.

This distinction matters practically. An SC or ST certificate obtained once does not need reapplying, which is worth knowing before somebody persuades you otherwise. For other categories, validity depends on the certificate type and the purpose, and institutions frequently set their own requirements about how recent a certificate must be.

Where renewal is needed, the steps are essentially the same as applying afresh, and an expired certificate is replaced by making a new application on the portal rather than through a separate renewal process. Always check the validity before submitting a certificate for a scholarship or job application, since a certificate the institution considers stale is functionally the same as not having one.
