“In Bengaluru, your child's school admission starts about a year before your child does. Nobody tells you this until the forms are already closed.”
• Tariq Sallam
School admission for 2027-28 in Bangalore is already under way. Many private schools opened their forms for the June 2027 session between September and November 2026, and the busiest stretch runs from now until roughly January 2027. Kendriya Vidyalayas and the RTE quota follow their own, later calendars, in March and April to May. If your child is starting Nursery, LKG or Class 1 next June, this is the month to get organised.
I have watched enough friends do the Bengaluru admission scramble to know how it goes. Someone in the apartment WhatsApp group posts that a popular school has closed its LKG forms, and twenty parents who thought they had until March suddenly discover they did not. Then follows a weekend of frantic form-filling, document scanning and arguments about whether the birth certificate says Ananya or Ananyaa.
This guide is the calm version. I have pulled together what schools and the government have actually published for 2027-28 so far: the age rules, when each type of school takes applications, the documents, the fee reality and a month-by-month plan. Where something has not been announced yet, I say so plainly rather than guessing.
Quick Information
Forms open before the mango season and close before you have finished debating CBSE versus ICSE. Start the paperwork now and argue about boards later.
When Do School Admissions for 2027-28 Open in Bangalore?
For most private schools in Bangalore, admissions for 2027-28 are open now. Schools set their own dates, but the pattern across the city is that forms appear between September and December of the year before, interviews and interactions run through the winter, and popular schools fill entry-level seats by January or February.
A few examples of what is already live. National Public School Indiranagar has published its 2027-28 registration pages for Montessori, Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 9 and 11, and its sister campuses in Rajajinagar, Koramangala and HSR Layout have 2027-28 pages too. Greenwood High's admissions portal says applications for Academic Year 2027-28 are open. Several CBSE chains are advertising 2027-28 seats on a first-come basis until April or May, but for the schools everyone in your building is talking about, waiting until spring is a mistake.
- Popular private and international schools. September 2026 to January 2027. Some close entry-level forms within weeks.
- Neighbourhood private and trust schools. Often November to March, sometimes rolling until seats fill.
- Kendriya Vidyalayas. Online, centrally, usually from late March, with lottery lists in April.
- RTE 25 percent quota. Online through the state portal, usually April to May, with lotteries from late May.
My rule of thumb: if a school has a waiting list in your apartment WhatsApp group, assume its forms are either open now or already closed. Check its website this week, not next month.
What Is the Age Limit for Class 1 Admission in Karnataka for 2027-28?
Karnataka's rule is that a child must be six years old by 1 June to join Class 1. That is the standing requirement the state moved to in line with the national six-plus policy, and the education department has resisted calls to scrap it.
The confusing bit is the relaxations. For 2025-26 the state allowed children around five and a half to enter, and for 2026-27 the government announced a 60-day relaxation of the six-years-by-1-June rule after pressure from parents. That relaxation was announced for 2026-27. At the time of writing I could not find any order extending it to 2027-28, so the safe planning assumption is simple: your child should be six by 1 June 2027 for Class 1.
Schools mirror this. NPS Indiranagar, for example, asks that a Grade 1 applicant be six as of 1 June 2027 and a Grade 2 applicant seven on the same date.
- Born on or before 1 June 2021. Plan for Class 1 in June 2027.
- Born after 1 June 2021. Plan for UKG in 2027-28, unless the state announces another relaxation. Do not count on one.
- Moving from another state. Ask the Bengaluru school in writing how it will treat your child's age and previous class.
What Is the Right Age for Nursery, LKG and UKG Admission in Bangalore?
Most Bengaluru schools take Nursery at about three, LKG at about four and UKG at about five, measured on the school's own cut-off date. Pre-primary classes are not yet regulated the way Class 1 is in Karnataka, so each school sets its own date, and that date is what decides which class your child fits.
Cut-off dates differ. Many Bengaluru schools measure age on 1 June, the start of the academic year. Others use 31 March or 1 April. The same child can be eligible for LKG at one school and only Nursery at another, which is exactly the kind of thing that ruins a Sunday.
- NPS Indiranagar, 2027-28. Montessori I at three and Kindergarten I at four, both as of 1 June 2027.
- Kendriya Vidyalaya pattern. Balvatika 1 for ages three to four, Balvatika 2 for four to five, Balvatika 3 for five to six, measured on 31 March. Not every KV runs all three.
- The practical move. Write down your child's date of birth, then ask each shortlisted school for its cut-off date before you pay any form fee.
Which Documents Do I Need for School Admission in Bangalore?
You need your child's birth certificate, Aadhaar cards for the child and parents, address proof and recent passport-size photographs of the child and both parents. Children moving into Class 2 or above also need a transfer certificate and recent report cards. Make one scanned folder of all of it today and you will thank yourself at eleven at night when a portal times out.
- Birth certificate. The single most important document. Check that the spelling of every name matches Aadhaar and passport exactly; schools like NPS ask you to write names as they appear on these.
- Aadhaar. For the child and both parents, where available. Some schools accept a birth certificate plus a parent's ID if the child has no Aadhaar yet; ask first.
- Address proof. Electricity or water bill, passport, driving licence or a registered rent agreement. Distance rules at some schools depend on it.
- Photographs. Recent passport-size photos of the child, mother and father. Keep digital copies under 200 KB for uploads.
- Transfer certificate and report cards. For Class 2 and above, and for Class 1 at some schools if your child did LKG and UKG elsewhere. NPS asks for the last three years of progress reports.
- Medical and vaccination records. Often requested for pre-primary, and a health note if your child needs special care.
- Caste or income certificate. Only if you are applying for a concession or an RTE seat.
How Does the Admission Process Work at Private Schools in Bangalore?
Most private schools follow the same five steps: an online registration with a fee, a printed and signed form with document copies, an interaction or test, a shortlist, and fee payment to confirm the seat. The details vary, and the details are where parents lose seats.
Step 1: Online registration
You fill in the online form, upload documents and photos and pay a processing or registration fee. At NPS Indiranagar this is Rs 750 for 2027-28. Expect anything from a few hundred rupees to a few thousand elsewhere, and note that it is almost never refundable.
Step 2: Paper still matters
Yes, in 2026. Several Bengaluru schools only process your registration once you deliver a printed copy signed by both parents with document photocopies. NPS asks for it to be dropped in a box at the school between 9 AM and noon on working weekdays. Miss this step and your neat online form goes nowhere.
Step 3: The interaction or test
For Nursery and LKG this is usually an informal interaction with the child and a chat with parents. From Class 1 upward, some schools test. NPS, for instance, tests English and Mathematics for Grades 1 to 5. Do not coach a three-year-old for an interview. Do make sure they have had breakfast.
Step 4: The shortlist and the phone call
Many schools only contact selected families, usually by phone. If you hear nothing, that is often the answer. Keep applying elsewhere until you have a confirmed seat.
Step 5: Pay and confirm
Offers come with a deadline to pay the admission fee and first term or annual fees. Get the full fee breakup in writing before you pay, including transport, books, uniform, activities and any one-time charges.
How Do Kendriya Vidyalaya Admissions Work for 2027-28?
Kendriya Vidyalaya admissions for Balvatika and Class 1 happen online on admission.kvs.gov.in, usually in late March, with seats filled through priority categories and a lottery. They do not run on the private school calendar at all, so do not panic in November if you cannot find a KV form.
For 2026-27, KV registration for Balvatika and Class 1 opened on March 20, 2026 and closed on April 2, with the first provisional lists on April 8 and 9 and further lists through April. The age cut-off was 31 March, with six years required for Class 1. Expect a similar window around March 2027 and watch the KVS notice for the exact dates.
- Who gets priority. Children of central government employees and other categories set by KVS. Civilians can apply but get lower priority.
- Bengaluru KVs. There are several, including campuses at IISc, Hebbal and Jalahalli. Seats are limited and competitive.
- Fees. Very low compared with private schools, which is exactly why demand is so high.
When Are RTE Admissions in Karnataka for 2027-28?
RTE applications in Karnataka usually open in April and close in May, with lottery rounds from late May into June. The quota covers LKG and Class 1 seats for eligible children, and the application runs online through the school education department.
For 2026-27 the schedule was: online applications from April 21 to May 17, 2026, the final eligible list on May 22, the first lottery on May 25 with enrolment until June 8, and a second lottery on June 12. Applicants can list up to three preferred schools. Expect the 2027-28 notification in spring 2027 on schooleducation.karnataka.gov.in.
Honest warning: since a 2018 rule change, Karnataka applies the RTE quota in private unaided schools only where there is no government or aided school in the neighbourhood. In practice very few Bengaluru private schools offer RTE seats, so check the list for your area as soon as it is published.
How Much Will School Fees Go Up for 2027-28 in Bangalore?
Plan for a 5 to 10 percent increase on whatever a school charged in 2026-27. That is the range private unaided schools commonly apply each year, and ahead of 2026-27 the private schools' association advised members not to go above 10 percent, citing higher electricity, water and salary costs. Some schools went higher, and parents complained.
- Ask for the full fee sheet. Tuition, admission fee, transport, books, uniform, activities, labs, technology and any one-time building or development charge.
- Ask about the next three years. A school that will not tell you how fees have moved over the last three years is telling you something.
- Never pay a donation. Capitation fees are illegal in Karnataka. If someone asks for an off-the-books payment, walk away and report it to the Department of School Education.
“If the admission office wants cash without a receipt, the school has already given you its first lesson. Do not enrol for the rest of the course.”

What Should My Month-by-Month Admission Plan Look Like?
Shortlist and apply to private schools between now and January, keep March free for Kendriya Vidyalaya forms, and April to May for RTE if you are eligible. Here is how I would lay it out if it were my child.
- November 2026. Fix your child's target class using the age rules. Shortlist six to eight schools within a sensible commute. Scan every document into one folder.
- December 2026. Submit forms to your top schools, deliver signed printouts where required, and visit campuses on a working day.
- January 2027. Interactions and tests. Apply to two backup schools that still have forms open.
- February 2027. Compare offers, get fee sheets in writing and pay to confirm only when you are sure.
- March 2027. Kendriya Vidyalaya registration if you are eligible.
- April to May 2027. RTE applications if eligible, uniforms, books, transport and the realisation that June is next month.
Which Mistakes Cost Parents a Seat?
Most lost seats come down to dates and paperwork, not to the child. The child is usually fine. The parent missed something.
- Assuming forms open in spring. For popular private schools they open in autumn and can close early.
- Ignoring the cut-off date. Applying for LKG at a school whose cut-off makes your child a Nursery applicant.
- Name mismatches. An extra letter on the birth certificate versus Aadhaar can stall verification.
- Skipping the printout. Some schools only count an application once the signed paper copy arrives.
- Paying too early. Do not pay a large non-refundable admission fee to a backup school before your first choice responds, unless you are comfortable losing it.
- Only applying to one school. Hope is not a strategy. Two or three serious applications plus one safe option is.
