“Admission season in this city rewards preparation rather than merit, at least at the entry stage. The families who get the school they wanted started eighteen months earlier.”
• On a process that runs on lead time
School admission in Bengaluru is a logistical exercise more than an academic one, particularly at pre primary and class one entry. The schools with good reputations receive many times more applications than they have seats, the process compresses into about three months, and the difference between a calm experience and a stressful one is almost entirely down to when you started.
It is also a process with some genuinely objectionable practices around its edges, including capitation demands dressed up as voluntary donations. Those are illegal in Karnataka, and knowing that is useful even when it is difficult to act on in the moment.
This guide covers the annual timeline month by month, the age criteria, the documents, what assessments and interviews involve at each stage, the RTE quota, fees and deposits, and what to do when a rejection comes. Our choosing a school and boards guides cover the decision itself.

What Is the School Admission Timeline in Bangalore?
Applications largely open between November and January for an academic year starting the following June, with assessments from December to February and offers from January to March. Waiting lists move into April and May.
- Eighteen to twelve months before: research. Shortlist eight to ten schools, visit on normal school days, talk to current parents, and drive the school run at eight in the morning.
- September to October: prepare documents. Birth certificate, address and ID proof, photographs, previous school reports and the transfer certificate. Request the TC early, since schools can take weeks.
- November to January: apply. To four or five schools across two fee brackets. Application windows are short and some schools close early once quotas fill.
- December to February: assessments and interactions. Play based observation at pre primary, written tests at higher classes, and a parent interaction at most schools.
- January to March: offers. Offers come with short acceptance deadlines and a fee payment requirement. Have the funds available, because a week's delay loses the seat.
- March to May: waiting lists move. Families decline seats as they secure preferred schools, so genuine movement happens late. Stay in touch politely with your preferred school.
- RTE runs on its own schedule. The state portal has separate application windows and a lottery. Check the Karnataka school education portal for current dates rather than assuming.
What Documents Do I Need?
Birth certificate, address proof, parent identity proof, photographs, previous school reports and a transfer certificate if moving schools. Assemble the folder in September, before applications open.
The document that catches people out is the transfer certificate, which your current school issues and which some schools are slow or awkward about providing, particularly if fees are outstanding or if they would rather keep the child. Request it as early as the process allows and in writing. For children moving from abroad, additional attestation or equivalence documentation may be required, so ask the receiving school precisely what they need well in advance.
Beyond the core set, schools commonly ask for Aadhaar for the child and parents, caste or category certificates where a reserved category applies, medical and immunisation records, and passport and visa documents for expatriate families. Keep a scanned set and several physical photocopy sets, because you will submit the same papers four or five times and always at short notice.
“Any payment a school asks for should arrive as a receipted, itemised fee. Capitation is illegal in Karnataka, and a school unwilling to put a number in writing is telling you something about how it operates.”
• On the part of admissions nobody enjoys
What Happens at the Assessment and Interview?
At pre primary, play based observation and a parent interaction, with no formal testing. At class one and above, written assessment in English and maths, prior school reports, and a conversation with the child and parents.
For a three or four year old, the school is observing social behaviour, communication and comfort in a new setting, not knowledge. Formal testing of very young children for admission is not appropriate and you are entitled to ask what the interaction involves. Do not coach a small child for this; it does not help and it makes the day harder for them.
The parent interaction is genuine and mutual. Schools are assessing whether your expectations match what they offer, and you should use it to ask the questions from our choosing a school guide: class size in the specific year, teacher retention, what happens when a child struggles, and the complete fee schedule in writing. A school that resists those questions is answering them.
How Does the RTE Quota Work?
Under the Right to Education Act, eligible private schools reserve twenty five percent of entry level seats for children from specified disadvantaged and economically weaker categories, allocated through the state portal, typically by lottery. Since a 2018 rule change, Karnataka applies this to private unaided schools only where no government or aided school is in the neighbourhood, so very few Bengaluru private schools offer RTE seats.
Applications are made through the Karnataka school education department's process rather than directly to the school, with its own window, documentation and verification requirements, and the state reimburses schools for these seats. Eligibility depends on category and income criteria, and the documentation requirements are strict, so read the current year's notification carefully.
Two practical notes. The scheme's implementation and scope have changed over the years and continue to be debated, so verify the current rules on the official portal rather than relying on older guidance including this. And if you are admitted under RTE, the seat covers tuition as specified but transport, books, uniform and activity costs are generally not covered, which is worth budgeting for.
What Should I Do If My Child Is Rejected?
Stay on the waiting list, accept a backup offer to secure a place, and expect genuine movement in March, April and May as families decline seats they no longer need.
- Apply to four or five schools from the start. Across two fee brackets. Families who apply to one or two preferred schools and nothing else are the ones who end up with no seat in April.
- Accept a backup and keep looking. A confirmed seat somewhere reasonable removes the panic. You can usually move later, though check what the admission fee refund policy is before paying.
- Stay politely in contact. A short, courteous email every few weeks to your preferred school keeps you visible when the list moves. Do not escalate or pester.
- Ask why, once. Some schools will tell you, and occasionally it is something fixable such as a missing document or an age criterion you can evidence differently.
- Consider a different entry year. Some schools have plentiful seats at class one but none at class two. If you can adjust timing, entry becomes far easier.
- Widen the area. The next quadrant may have a good school with seats. Our schools by area guide covers what each part of the city offers.
- Do not pay capitation to secure a seat. It is illegal in Karnataka, it funds the practice, and a school that demands it is not the school you were hoping for anyway.
School Admission in Bangalore: Frequently Asked Questions
When do school admissions open in Bangalore?
Applications largely open between November and January for the academic year starting the following June, with some premium and IB schools opening earlier. Assessments run December to February, offers January to March, and waiting lists move into April and May.
What documents are needed for school admission in Bangalore?
Birth certificate, address proof, parent identity proof, photographs, previous school reports and a transfer certificate if moving schools. Aadhaar for child and parents is commonly requested, along with medical records and, for expatriate families, passport and visa documents.
What is the age criteria for class one in Bangalore?
Karnataka requires a child to have completed six years by 1 June of the admission year. For 2026-27 only, the state allowed a relaxation of up to 60 days, so children aged five years ten months by 1 June could be considered. Confirm each school's process directly.
What happens at a school admission interview in Bangalore?
At pre primary, play based observation of the child and a parent interaction, with no formal testing. At class one and above, written assessment in English and maths, prior school reports and a conversation with child and parents. Do not coach a small child for it.
How does the RTE quota work in Bangalore?
Eligible private schools reserve 25 percent of entry level seats for children from specified disadvantaged and economically weaker categories, applied for through the Karnataka school education department's portal and typically allocated by lottery. Since a 2018 rule change, Karnataka applies this to private unaided schools only where no government or aided school is in the neighbourhood, so very few Bengaluru private schools offer RTE seats. Verify current rules on the official portal.
Are school donations legal in Bangalore?
Capitation fees are illegal in Karnataka. Any payment a school asks for should be a receipted, itemised fee, and a school unwilling to put a figure in writing is telling you something important about how it operates.
How many schools should I apply to in Bangalore?
Four or five, across two fee brackets. Families who apply to only one or two preferred schools are the ones left without a seat in April, because good schools receive many times more applications than they have places.
What should I do if my child does not get a seat?
Accept a reasonable backup offer to secure a place, stay on the waiting list with polite periodic contact, and expect real movement in March, April and May as families decline seats. Also consider a different entry year or a neighbouring area.
How much is the admission fee at Bangalore schools?
Roughly Rs 25,000 to 5 lakh as a one off depending on the segment, sometimes with a separate refundable deposit. Establish what is refundable and under what conditions in writing before paying anything.
How early should I start the school admission process?
Twelve to eighteen months before the intended start. That gives you time to shortlist and visit schools, talk to current parents, drive the school run at peak hour and assemble documents before applications open in November.

Verify current dates, rules and affiliations directly, since all three change annually.
