“Parents choose a school on the day of the tour and then spend twelve years living with a commute they never tested.”
• The mistake I see most often
Choose the board first, then the commute, then the school. That order sounds cold and it is the only sequence that produces a decision you will still be happy with in year four, because the board shapes what your child studies for a decade and the commute shapes their daily life.
Bangalore has one of India's deepest concentrations of schools, running from state board institutions charging a few thousand rupees a year to international schools charging several lakhs. The range is genuinely enormous and the quality is not a straight function of the fee.
This guide covers the boards, the school belts, admission timelines, fee ranges and the specific questions worth asking on a school tour.
Quick Information
Every question a parent asks in the first week of school hunting, tabled in advance.
Which Board Should I Choose in Bangalore?
CBSE if your family may move within India or your child is likely to sit national entrance exams, ICSE for breadth and English strength, state board for local cost and context, and IB or Cambridge if you are planning on overseas universities or may relocate internationally.
- CBSE. The most widely available board in the city and nationally portable. Aligned to national entrance examinations, which matters if engineering or medicine is on the horizon.
- ICSE and ISC. Broader curriculum with strong emphasis on English and project work. Well represented in Bengaluru's older schools.
- Karnataka State Board. Lowest cost, strong local language provision, and the right choice for many families staying in the state.
- IB. Inquiry-based, continuous assessment, and recognised by universities worldwide. The most expensive option here.
- Cambridge IGCSE. International curriculum with external examinations, often paired with A Levels or the IB diploma programme.
- Switching later. Possible but disruptive, particularly after class eight. Choose as though you will not switch.
The board question really becomes a question about what happens at sixteen. If national entrance exams are likely, CBSE alignment helps. If overseas study is likely, IB or Cambridge does. Deciding this at class nine is late.
Where Are Bangalore's Main School Belts?
Whitefield and the east, north Bengaluru, south Bengaluru, and the central Cantonment schools, and each belt has a different character. Where you live largely determines your realistic shortlist, because a school on the wrong side of the city is not a school you can actually use.
- Whitefield and Sarjapur Road. The international school belt. Large campuses, IB and Cambridge programmes, and the highest fees in the city.
- North Bengaluru. Hebbal, Yelahanka, Jakkur and Devanahalli. Newer campuses with space, serving the north's residential growth.
- South Bengaluru. Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Basavanagudi and Banashankari. Established CBSE and ICSE schools, many decades old, with reasonable fees.
- Central and Cantonment. Some of the city's oldest institutions, with long waiting lists and strong alumni networks.
- West Bengaluru. Rajajinagar, Vijayanagar and Malleshwaram. Good schools, better value, less discussed.
When Do School Admissions Open in Bangalore?
Applications typically open between November and January for an academic year starting in June, and the most sought-after schools close early. Some schools open registration even earlier for nursery and pre-primary intake.
- Start a year ahead. Shortlisting should begin roughly twelve months before you want a seat.
- November to January. The main application window for most private schools.
- Interaction and assessment. Many schools conduct a parent interaction and an informal child interaction. These are not exams; treat them as a conversation.
- RTE applications. The Right to Education quota process runs on its own state timeline. Watch the education department portal.
- Mid-year transfers. Possible where seats exist, most commonly for families relocating. Ask directly rather than assuming a school is full.
What Do Schools in Bangalore Cost?
Anywhere from a few thousand rupees a year at a state board school to over ten lakh at a top international school, and the fee bands are wide. The published tuition is also not the whole cost.
- State board. A few thousand to a few tens of thousands per year.
- CBSE and ICSE. Roughly Rs 60,000 to Rs 3 lakh per year, with enormous variation by school and area.
- IB and Cambridge. Roughly Rs 4 lakh to Rs 12 lakh per year and upward.
- Admission fee. A one-time charge at entry, sometimes substantial. Ask whether it is refundable.
- Transport. School bus fees are charged separately and vary with distance.
- The extras. Uniforms, books, technology levies, activity fees, trips and examination charges. Ask for a full annual cost sheet, not just tuition.
What Is the RTE Quota and How Does It Work?
The Right to Education Act reserves 25 per cent of entry-level seats in private unaided schools for children from specified disadvantaged and weaker sections, with the state reimbursing the school. Karnataka changed its rules in 2018 so that a child can get an RTE seat in a private unaided school only if there is no government or aided school in the neighbourhood. Most Bengaluru neighbourhoods have one, so very few private schools in the city now offer RTE seats. Karnataka administers the process through the school education department on an annual timeline.
Applications are made through the state process rather than to individual schools, eligibility is defined by category and residence criteria, and allotment is typically by lottery where applications exceed seats. Watch the education department portal for each year's notification, since dates shift.
What Should I Actually Check on a School Tour?
The commute, the teacher turnover and the class size, in that order. Everything else on a school tour is designed to impress you, and these three are the things that determine your child's daily experience.
- Do the commute. Drive it at 7.30 AM on a weekday before you accept a seat. A forty minute route on Google Maps is an hour and ten in school-run traffic.
- Ask about teacher turnover. How many teachers left last year, and why. This single question tells you more than the infrastructure tour.
- Class size and section count. Ask for actual numbers in the class your child would join, not the school average.
- Look at the ordinary classrooms. Not the labs and the auditorium. Ask to see a normal room mid-morning.
- Ask about support. How the school handles a child who is struggling, and what learning support exists.
- Talk to current parents. At pickup, not at the open day. This is the most useful twenty minutes you will spend.
- Ask about the fee escalation. What the annual increase has been over the last three years.
Best Schools in Bangalore: Frequently Asked Questions
Which board is best for schools in Bangalore?
CBSE if you may move within India or your child will sit national entrance exams, ICSE for curriculum breadth and English, state board for cost and local context, and IB or Cambridge for international university plans.
When do school admissions open in Bangalore?
Typically between November and January for an academic year beginning in June. Sought-after schools close applications early, so start shortlisting about a year ahead.
How much do schools in Bangalore cost?
Roughly a few thousand rupees a year at state board schools, Rs 60,000 to Rs 3 lakh at CBSE and ICSE schools, and Rs 4 lakh to Rs 12 lakh or more for IB and Cambridge programmes.
Which areas have the best schools in Bangalore?
Whitefield and Sarjapur Road for international schools, north Bengaluru for newer campuses, south Bengaluru for established CBSE and ICSE schools, and the central Cantonment area for the city's oldest institutions.
What is the RTE quota in Karnataka?
A reservation of 25 per cent of entry-level seats for children from specified disadvantaged and weaker sections, administered by the state education department with reimbursement to schools. Since a 2018 rule change, Karnataka applies it to private unaided schools only where no government or aided school is in the neighbourhood, so very few Bengaluru private schools offer RTE seats.
Is IB worth the cost in Bangalore?
It is worth considering if overseas university study or international relocation is likely. For families staying in India and targeting national entrance exams, CBSE alignment is usually more practical.
Can I change my child's board later?
Yes, but it is disruptive, particularly after class eight. Choose the board as though you will not switch.
What should I check before accepting a school seat?
Test the commute at the actual school run hour, ask about teacher turnover and real class sizes, see ordinary classrooms, and ask for a full annual cost sheet including transport and extras.
Are there good state board schools in Bangalore?
Yes, and they remain the right choice for many families, offering low cost and strong local language provision.
How competitive are Bangalore school admissions?
Very, at the most sought-after schools, which often close applications within weeks of opening. Less so across the wider market, where seats are usually available.
