“Some buildings host culture. Ravindra Kalakshetra basically raised it.”

• Tariq Sallam, The City 24/7

If you've ever walked down JC Road on a weekday evening and noticed a crowd in their best kurtas and silk saris queuing outside a grand old building, congratulations. You've found Ravindra Kalakshetra.

It's been Bengaluru's go-to stage for Kannada theatre, dance and music since 1963. Before the malls, before the breweries, before anyone said the words "immersive experience" with a straight face, this was where the city came to watch something live.

Here's my quick guide: the history, the layout, how to find shows and how not to get lost on JC Road.

What Is Ravindra Kalakshetra?

Ravindra Kalakshetra is a cultural auditorium on JC Road in central Bengaluru, built to celebrate the birth centenary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The name says it: "Ravindra" for Tagore, "Kalakshetra" for a home of the arts.

The foundation stone was laid on 16 September 1960, and the building was inaugurated on 9 March 1963 by Humayun Kabir, then the Union Minister for Education. It was designed by architect Charles Wilson, with B R Manikyam as chief engineer.

Six decades later, it's still one of the most important stages in the state for Kannada theatre. A lot of the big names of Kannada stage and screen have performed here, from Master Hirannaiah to Prakash Raj.

What's Inside the Auditorium?

The main hall seats about 900 people, with roughly 400 of those in the balcony. It's a proper proscenium theatre: a big stage, a deep hall and that slightly dramatic old-auditorium feel you don't get in a mall multiplex.

  • The Tagore statue. A statue of the poet sits in a glass showcase at the entrance. Say hello on your way in.
  • Sound and lights. The hall has a modern sound system and a computerised lighting rig, so the performances look and sound far better than the building's age suggests.
  • Samsa Bayalu Rangamandira. Right next door is an open-air stage named after the Kannada playwright Samsa. On a pleasant Bengaluru evening, an outdoor show here is hard to beat.

What Kind of Shows Happen Here?

Mostly Kannada theatre, along with classical dance recitals, music concerts, award functions and cultural festivals. If you want to understand why Bengaluru takes its theatre seriously, this is a very good place to start.

My tip: don't skip a Kannada play just because your Kannada stops at "swalpa adjust maadi". Good theatre travels, and the energy in this hall is half the fun.

How Do I Find Shows and Tickets?

Shows are booked by individual theatre groups and organisers, so tickets are sold per event. Check the organiser's page, ticketing apps and our What's Happening section, where we list the good ones as we hear about them.

GOOD TO KNOW

Many shows start on time, properly on time. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early, because JC Road traffic does not care about your curtain call.

Where Exactly Is Ravindra Kalakshetra?

It's on JC Road, close to Puttanna Chetty Town Hall, in the busy old heart of the city. Parking nearby is limited, so an auto, a cab or public transport is the calmer choice.
