Hospitals in Bangalore, by Area: Where to Go Before You Need to Know

The worst time to research a hospital is at 2 AM with someone in the back seat. Ten minutes now, area by area, and you will never have to.

QUICK ANSWER

  • In an emergency, the nearest capable hospital beats the best-known one; Bengaluru traffic decides outcomes.
  • Note the 24-hour emergency department closest to your home and office before you need it.
  • Government hospitals remain the city's depth for trauma, neurology and mental health, and cost far less.
  • Call 112 for any emergency or 108 for an ambulance.

Bengaluru has some of the best healthcare in India. Knowing which building to drive to is the part nobody prepares for.

“Bengaluru is a city people fly into for surgery. It is also a city where residents cannot name the emergency room four kilometres from their house.”

• On a strange gap

Bengaluru has some of the best healthcare infrastructure in India. It is a major medical tourism destination, it holds several nationally significant specialist institutes, and the standard of private multi-specialty care here is genuinely high. None of that helps at 2 AM if you do not know which gate to drive to.

This guide is organised the way you will actually need it: by area. For each part of the city it lists the major multi-specialty hospitals with emergency departments, plus the specialist institutes worth knowing about wherever you live. It also covers ambulances, insurance, what to keep ready and the numbers to save.

I am not ranking hospitals and I am not giving medical advice. What this does is answer one question well: from where I live, where do I go, and what should I have ready before I go there. Do the ten minutes of reading now.

What Should I Do Before an Emergency Happens?

Identify your two nearest emergency departments today, and save the route. Not one, because the nearest may be full or may not have the specialty you need. Then do the four other things on this list, all of which take a single evening.

  • Map two hospitals. Find the two nearest hospitals with a 24 hour emergency department, save both in your maps app, and check the actual entrance the emergency department uses. It is often not the main gate.
  • Save the numbers. 112 for emergencies, 108 for ambulance, plus the direct emergency numbers for both hospitals. Put them in your phone as favourites.
  • Keep documents ready. Insurance card or policy number, a government ID, and a note of blood group, allergies and current medication for everyone in the house. A photo on your phone is enough.
  • Know your insurance network. Cashless treatment only works at network hospitals. Check which of your two nearest are in your insurer's list, because that is a very different bill.
  • Tell someone. If you live alone, make sure one person nearby knows your medical basics and where your documents are. This is the most commonly skipped step and the most important one.
  • Keep a small kit. Basic first aid, a thermometer, oral rehydration salts and your usual medication. Not for emergencies, but for the far more common 11 PM problem.
THE ENTRANCE MATTERS

Large Bengaluru hospitals often have a separate emergency entrance, sometimes on a different road from the main gate. Find it on a map now. Circling a compound wall while someone is unwell is a specific kind of awful.

Which Hospitals Are in Central Bangalore and the Cantonment?

The central city has the oldest and most established hospital cluster in Bengaluru, much of it dating to the Cantonment era, and it remains well served for emergency care.

  • Multi-specialty. Mallya Hospital near Vittal Mallya Road, Manipal on Millers Road, and St Martha's near Shivajinagar all run emergency departments in the central area.
  • Government. Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Shivajinagar and Victoria Hospital near KR Market are major government facilities with emergency services.
  • Specialist. Minto Eye Hospital and the Bangalore Medical College complex sit in the same central belt, alongside Kidwai Memorial for oncology to the south.
  • Nearby. Baptist Hospital toward Hebbal and Apollo Sheshadripuram serve the northern and western edges of the centre.

Which Hospitals Serve Koramangala, HSR Layout and the South-East?

St John's Medical College Hospital is the anchor, and it is one of the best-regarded teaching hospitals in the country. It sits on the Koramangala side of the Sarjapur Road junction with a full emergency department.

  • Koramangala. St John's Medical College Hospital and Apollo Spectra Koramangala, both central to the neighbourhood.
  • HSR Layout. Narayana Multispeciality HSR, plus the Koramangala options a short drive north.
  • Sarjapur Road and the ORR. Sakra World Hospital at Devarabeesanahalli is the major facility on the corridor, with Motherhood, Cloudnine Sarjapur and Manipal Sarjapur Road also serving the area.
  • Bannerghatta Road side. Fortis Bannerghatta Road and Sagar Hospitals cover the southern approach from JP Nagar.
  • Specialist nearby. NIMHANS on Hosur Road for neurology and psychiatry, and the Jayadeva cardiology institute a short distance west.

Which Hospitals Serve Whitefield, Marathahalli and East Bangalore?

East Bangalore is now well covered, which was not true fifteen years ago. Manipal Whitefield, Vydehi Institute and Columbia Asia Whitefield all run emergency departments, and Sakra World Hospital on the ORR serves the western edge of the area.

For Marathahalli and the Old Airport Road stretch, Sakra and the Whitefield cluster are both within reach, with Cloudnine and Manipal Old Airport Road covering the city side. The practical advice in the east is to identify which side of the Marathahalli bridge or the KR Puram junction your nearest option sits on, because in heavy traffic that decision matters more than the extra two kilometres.

Which Hospitals Serve Jayanagar, JP Nagar and South Bangalore?

This is one of the strongest hospital clusters in the city, and it includes a nationally significant institute. The Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Jayanagar is one of India's major cardiac centres and takes emergency cardiac cases.

  • Jayanagar. Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, Apollo Jayanagar, Sagar Hospitals and Jayanagar General Hospital.
  • JP Nagar and Bannerghatta Road. Fortis Bannerghatta Road, Apollo and a good spread of smaller multi-specialty hospitals and clinics.
  • Basavanagudi and the old south. Served by the Jayanagar cluster, with several established smaller hospitals and nursing homes within the neighbourhood.
  • Maternity. Cloudnine has locations across the south, and the area has a dense supply of maternity and paediatric facilities.
  • Specialist. Narayana Nethralaya and Sankara Eye Hospital for ophthalmology, and HCG for oncology, all accessible from the southern belt.

Which Hospitals Serve Electronic City and the Hosur Road Corridor?

Narayana Health City at Bommasandra is the headline facility, and it is a major campus. It handles a very high volume of cardiac and multi-specialty work and is the obvious emergency destination for the southern end of the corridor.

Closer in, Sparsh and Springleaf serve Electronic City itself, and the Jayanagar and JP Nagar clusters are now a straightforward Yellow Line metro ride or road trip north. If you live on this corridor, the Bommasandra campus is the one to have saved.

Which Hospitals Serve North and West Bangalore?

Both are better served than their reputations suggest, and the north in particular has grown quickly alongside its population.

  • Hebbal and the inner north. Manipal Hebbal, Aster CMI, Columbia Asia Hebbal and Baptist Hospital, all with emergency departments and all within a short radius.
  • Yelahanka and the outer north. Sparsh Yelahanka, Cytecare for oncology, and the Hebbal cluster a short drive south.
  • Malleshwaram and north-west. Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Manipal Northside and KC General, one of the older government hospitals in the city.
  • Rajajinagar and the west. Sagar Chandramma, Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain, Manipal Yeshwanthpur and ESI Rajajinagar.
  • Kengeri and the outer west. Served by the Rajajinagar and Yeshwanthpur cluster, plus the medical college hospitals along the Mysore Road corridor.

How Do Ambulances Work in Bangalore?

Dial 108 for the state ambulance service and 112 for any emergency. The 108 service is free and covers Karnataka, and in Bengaluru it is reasonably responsive, though traffic is traffic and response times vary by area and hour.

  • 108. The Karnataka emergency ambulance service, free of charge, dispatched to your location. The default first call.
  • Hospital ambulances. Most large private hospitals run their own fleet and will dispatch on a direct call, often faster if you are close to them. This is why having the hospital's direct number saved matters.
  • Private operators. Several private ambulance services operate in the city, including app-based ones. Useful for planned transfers and non-critical transport.
  • The traffic reality. Bengaluru drivers are improving at making way but it is not reliable. In severe traffic, a two wheeler escort or simply driving to a nearer hospital is sometimes the faster call.
  • Know before you call. Have your exact location with a landmark ready. Address confusion, especially in Indiranagar and Koramangala, costs more time than anything else.

What Should I Know About Health Insurance and Hospital Bills Here?

Cashless treatment only works within your insurer's network, and that is the single most consequential detail. Bengaluru's private hospitals are excellent and not cheap, and the difference between a network and a non-network admission is substantial.

  • Check the network. Confirm which of your two nearest hospitals are in your insurer's cashless network. Do this now, not at admission.
  • Employer cover. Most large Bengaluru employers provide group health cover with a wide network. Know your policy number and the TPA helpline.
  • Pre-authorisation. Planned procedures usually need pre-authorisation. Emergency admissions are handled after the fact, but the insurance desk will want documents fast.
  • Keep a buffer. Even with cashless cover, hospitals often ask for an initial deposit on emergency admission. Having a card that can take it matters.
  • Government schemes. Karnataka runs state health schemes with coverage at empanelled hospitals. Eligibility and empanelment details are on the state health department's site.

Hospitals in Bangalore: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the emergency number in Bangalore?

112 for all emergencies, and 108 for the free Karnataka state ambulance service. Save both, along with the direct emergency numbers of your two nearest hospitals.

Which is the best hospital in Bangalore?

It depends entirely on the specialty and the area. For cardiac care, Sri Jayadeva Institute and Narayana Health City are nationally significant; for neurology and psychiatry, NIMHANS; for oncology, Kidwai Memorial and HCG. For general emergencies, the nearest well-equipped multi-specialty hospital is the right answer.

Which hospitals are near Koramangala and HSR Layout?

St John's Medical College Hospital and Apollo Spectra in Koramangala, Narayana Multispeciality in HSR Layout, and Sakra World Hospital on the Outer Ring Road nearby.

Which hospitals are in Whitefield?

Manipal Whitefield, Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Columbia Asia Whitefield, with Sakra World Hospital serving the western edge of the area.

Which hospital should I go to in Electronic City?

Narayana Health City at Bommasandra is the major campus on the corridor, with Sparsh and Springleaf serving Electronic City itself.

Are there good government hospitals in Bangalore?

Yes. Victoria Hospital, Bowring and Lady Curzon, KC General and Jayanagar General Hospital all provide emergency services, and specialist state institutes including NIMHANS, Kidwai Memorial, Jayadeva and Minto are among the best in the country.

How do I call an ambulance in Bangalore?

Dial 108 for the free state service or 112 for any emergency. Large private hospitals also run their own ambulances and will dispatch on a direct call, which is often faster if you are nearby.

Does health insurance work at any hospital in Bangalore?

Cashless treatment only works at hospitals in your insurer's network. Check which of your nearest hospitals are empanelled before you need them, because a non-network admission changes the bill significantly.

What documents should I keep ready for a hospital visit?

Insurance card or policy number, a government ID, and a note of blood group, allergies and current medication for everyone in the household. Photos on your phone are sufficient.

Why is Bangalore a medical tourism destination?

Because it combines a high concentration of specialist institutes and accredited private hospitals with lower costs than most international markets, and it is well connected by air, which brings a substantial volume of patients from across India and abroad.
