“A car near this city does not buy you speed. It buys you the last twenty kilometres, which is where all the good places are.”
• The real argument for driving
The best places to visit around Bangalore by car are Nandi Hills at 1.5 hours, Mysore at 3 hours on the expressway, the Kanakapura river belt at 2.5 hours, Chikmagalur at 5 hours, Coorg at 5.5 hours, and Ooty at 6.5 hours. A car is essential rather than convenient for estate homestays, river camps and viewpoints away from the main roads.
The reason to think in drive time rather than kilometres is that distance around Bengaluru is a poor guide. Mysore at 145 km takes under three hours on the expressway. Coorg at 250 km takes five and a half, because the last seventy kilometres are narrow. BR Hills at 180 km takes four. The map lies, the clock does not.
So this guide sorts by hours at the wheel, notes road conditions honestly, and flags the places where a car is the difference between seeing something and not. If you do not have a car, the guide to visiting places near Bangalore without a car covers the alternative properly, and the road trip guide has the highway detail.
Quick Information
Drive time, road quality and what a car unlocks, in one place.
Which Places Near Bangalore Can You Reach by Car in Under Two Hours?
Nandi Hills, Manchanabele, Ramanagara, Savandurga, the Big Banyan Tree and Hesaraghatta. All under 70 km, all on good roads, and all realistically done before lunch if you are out of the city by 6.30 AM.
- Nandi Hills, 60 km. NH44 north, then a ticketed climb by road to the top. Ninety minutes, and the drive itself is easy and fast.
- Manchanabele, 40 km. Magadi road, via the Big Banyan Tree. The last stretch is narrow but fine for any car.
- Ramanagara and Savandurga, 50 to 55 km. Mysore road and Magadi road respectively. Good surfaces throughout.
- Hesaraghatta, 30 km. Twenty-five minutes past the northern edge of the city. Grassland and birding, and the closest countryside there is.
The single biggest variable in any drive from this city is not the highway, it is the first fifteen kilometres. Getting to the outer ring road before 6.30 AM turns a two-hour drive into ninety minutes, and after 9 AM turns it into three hours.
What Are the Best Drives Within Three Hours of Bangalore?
Mysore on the expressway, the Kanakapura road to Bheemeshwari, and the Hyderabad highway to Lepakshi. These three are the best combination of good road surface and a destination that justifies the journey.
- Mysore, NH275, 145 km. The best highway out of the city. Under three hours. Watch the limited exits, which punish a missed turn, and the speed enforcement.
- Kanakapura to Bheemeshwari, 100 km. Two and a half hours through granite country into Cauvery river forest. The landscape changes completely, which few drives from this city manage.
- Lepakshi, NH44 north, 125 km. Fast four-lane highway to Hindupur, then a short run to the temple. Two and a half hours, and the carving is worth the early start.
- Shivanasamudra, 135 km. Three hours via Malavalli. Good road, and worth timing to the monsoon when the falls are at full flow.
Which Destinations Near Bangalore Genuinely Need a Car?
Estate homestays in Coorg and Chikmagalur, the Cauvery river camps, Kemmangundi and Mullayanagiri, Bisle Ghat, Muthathi and Doddamakali. In each case public transport gets you to a town and then stops, and the thing you came for is fifteen to twenty-five kilometres further on.
- Coffee estate stays. Buses reach Madikeri, Chikmagalur and Sakleshpur towns. The homestays sit on estate roads with nothing running to them, and autos are scarce and expensive.
- Kemmangundi and Mullayanagiri. Steep, narrow roads above Chikmagalur. A car with reasonable ground clearance genuinely helps.
- Bisle Ghat, Sakleshpur. A forest road to a viewpoint with no public transport at all.
- Muthathi and Doddamakali. Cauvery river forest with rough approach tracks. Ground clearance matters.
- BR Hills. Buses reach Yelandur and Chamarajanagar. The sanctuary and lodge are well beyond that.
“Public transport near Bengaluru is genuinely good at reaching towns and completely useless at reaching viewpoints.”
• The gap a car fills
Which Trips Near Bangalore Do Not Need a Car at All?
Mysore, Hampi, Gokarna and Ooty, all of which have good rail or bus links and are easier without a car than with one. Hampi in particular is better on a rented scooter than in a car, because the ruins are spread across fourteen square kilometres of narrow lanes and riverside tracks.
- Mysore. A dozen trains a day including the Shatabdi. Two hours, then autos and taxis in town. Driving gains you nothing.
- Hampi. Overnight train to Hosapete, then a scooter for two days. The best way to see it.
- Gokarna. Overnight sleeper bus or the Konkan line. Ten hours of driving each way is a poor trade.
- Ooty. Train to Mettupalayam and the Nilgiri mountain railway up. The journey is the attraction.
What Does Driving Around Bangalore Cost?
Rs 8 to 10 per kilometre in fuel for a petrol hatchback, Rs 12 to 15 for a diesel SUV, plus Rs 400 to 1,200 in tolls depending on direction. A self-drive rental adds Rs 2,000 to 3,500 a day, and roughly double that on long weekends.
Cost by Trip
Round trip, petrol hatchback, fuel and tolls only.
Should You Use Your Own Car or Rent One?
Own car for anything under 300 km, a rental with good ground clearance for estate country, and a hired driver for anything over 500 km or a multi-day loop. The self-drive rental market in this city is large and reasonably reliable, but rates roughly double on long weekends and the good vehicles are booked three weeks out.
- Own car. Cheapest, simplest, and you know what you are driving. Best for repeated short trips.
- Self drive rental. Rs 2,000 to 3,500 a day, fuel on you, usually with a kilometre cap. Read the cap, it matters on a Coorg run.
- Hired driver with your car. Rs 1,200 to 1,800 a day plus their food and stay. The best value on a four-night loop, and you arrive rested.
- Full taxi package. Rs 14 to 20 per km with a 250 km daily minimum. Sensible for a Mysore or Coorg round trip, expensive for long loops.
- What to check on a rental. Kilometre cap, fuel policy, ground clearance, spare tyre condition, and whether inter-state travel is permitted.
What Should You Check Before Driving Out of Bangalore?
FASTag balance, documents, tyres and reserve timings. The one people forget is the FASTag, and a dead tag at the Attibele or Maddur plaza means paying double in cash with a queue behind you.
- Documents. Licence, RC, insurance and PUC. Digital copies on DigiLocker are accepted.
- FASTag. Top up the night before. Every major highway out of this city is tolled.
- Tyres and brakes. Ghat sections to Coorg, Chikmagalur and Ooty are hard on both. Check pressure including the spare.
- Offline maps. Coverage vanishes in the Ghats, at Bisle, above Kemmangundi and on parts of the Hampi approach.
- Reserve timings. Bandipur and Nagarhole highways close from about 9 PM to 6 AM.
- Night driving. Fine on the four-lane highways, best avoided on ghat and forest roads.
FAQs
What are the best places to visit around Bangalore by car?
Nandi Hills at 1.5 hours, Mysore at 3 hours on the expressway, the Kanakapura river belt at 2.5 hours, Chikmagalur at 5 hours, Coorg at 5.5 hours and Ooty at 6.5 hours. A car matters most for estate homestays, river camps and viewpoints that no bus reaches.
Which destinations near Bangalore need a car?
Coffee estate homestays in Coorg and Chikmagalur, the Cauvery river camps at Muthathi and Doddamakali, Kemmangundi and Mullayanagiri, Bisle Ghat and BR Hills. Buses reach the nearest town and stop, and the place you want is fifteen to twenty-five kilometres further.
What is the best drive from Bangalore?
NH75 to Chikmagalur via Hassan, about 245 km and four and a half hours on a wide, well-surfaced highway that climbs at the end. The Bengaluru Mysuru expressway is the fastest good road, and Bandipur to Ooty with its 36 hairpins is the most dramatic.
How much does it cost to drive from Bangalore for a weekend?
About Rs 8 to 10 per kilometre in fuel for a petrol hatchback and Rs 12 to 15 for an SUV, plus Rs 400 to 1,200 in tolls. A Coorg weekend of 520 km round trip costs roughly Rs 4,800 for the car, so Rs 1,200 per person with four people.
Do I need an SUV for trips near Bangalore?
For most trips, no. A hatchback handles the highways and hill roads to Coorg, Ooty and Mysore comfortably. Ground clearance genuinely helps on Chikmagalur estate roads, the Kemmangundi climb, Muthathi and Doddamakali, where approach tracks are rough.
Is a self-drive rental worth it for trips from Bangalore?
Yes for trips under 300 km, at Rs 2,000 to 3,500 a day. Check the kilometre cap, the fuel policy and whether inter-state travel is permitted. Rates roughly double on long weekends and the better vehicles are booked three weeks ahead.
What time should I leave Bangalore by car?
Before 6 AM or after 9.30 PM. The first fifteen kilometres decide the trip. Leaving between those windows costs you an hour to ninety minutes, and considerably more on Hosur Road or the Mysore road approach on a weekend morning.
Is night driving around Bangalore safe?
Reasonably safe and much emptier on the four-lane highways to Mysore, Tumkur and Hosur. Avoid ghat and forest roads at night: the Shiradi and Charmadi ghats combine trucks with hairpins and no lighting, and the Bandipur and Nagarhole highways close from about 9 PM to 6 AM.
