Chikmagalur From Bangalore: The Complete Guide to Karnataka's Best Coffee Weekend

Two hundred and forty-five kilometres up the best highway out of this city, to the tallest peak in Karnataka and the quietest coffee country in the south. Everything you need in one place.

QUICK ANSWER

  • Chikmagalur is about 245 km from Bangalore, a four and a half to five hour drive via Hassan on NH75.
  • Two nights at a good estate homestay with meals cost roughly Rs 8,000 to 13,000 per person, with four people sharing a car.
  • Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak, needs an online vehicle pass booked in advance for a 6 am to 12 noon or 1 pm to 6 pm slot.

“Coorg is the weekend everyone books. Chikmagalur is the one they book the second time, and usually prefer.”

• A pattern I have watched repeatedly

Chikmagalur is about 245 km from Bangalore, a four and a half to five hour drive via Hassan on NH75, and it is the best drive out of this city. It holds Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka at 1,930 metres, the Baba Budangiri range where Indian coffee began, and homestay food better than anywhere else in the region. Two nights, Rs 8,000 to 13,000 per person.

The case for Chikmagalur over Coorg is simple. It is higher, greener, quieter and cheaper, the drive is significantly better, and the food at a good homestay is the best in coffee country. What it lacks is Coorg's density of attractions, which means if you need a full itinerary you will run out of things to tick off. Most people discover that this is a feature.

This guide covers the route, the peaks, where to stay, what to eat, the season and the costs, plus the practical detail on Kemmangundi and Hebbe Falls that trips people up.

How Far Is Chikmagalur From Bangalore and What Is the Route?

About 245 km, and four and a half to five hours via Nelamangala, Kunigal, Hassan and Belur on NH75. This is the best long drive from Bengaluru: a wide, well-surfaced highway through coconut and areca country, with a genuine climb at the end.

  • The route. NH75 through Nelamangala, Kunigal, Channarayapatna and Hassan, then Belur and up to Chikmagalur. Well signed throughout.
  • When to leave. Before 6.30 AM to clear Nelamangala, or Friday night at 9.30 PM. The bottleneck is the Nelamangala junction, not the highway.
  • Stops. The highway udupis between Nelamangala and Kunigal for thatte idli and ragi mudde, and Hassan for a proper meal.
  • Add Belur and Halebidu. Both sit right on this route, about 30 km short of Chikmagalur. Doing them on the way home costs you two hours and is worth every minute.
  • By train. To Kadur, then a bus or taxi the 40 km to Chikmagalur. There is also a direct service to Chikmagalur on a limited schedule.
GOOD TO KNOW

Ask your homestay about the approach road before you book. Several of the best properties in Chikmagalur sit at the end of one to three kilometres of estate track, and a low hatchback will scrape. This is the single most common surprise on arrival.

What Are the Best Things to Do in Chikmagalur?

Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri, Kemmangundi and Hebbe Falls, plus an estate walk. Mullayanagiri is the highest point in Karnataka and you can drive most of the way, with a short flight of steps to the temple at the summit.

  • Mullayanagiri, 1,930 m. The highest peak in Karnataka, about 20 km from town. A narrow road takes you close to the top, then roughly 400 steps to the summit temple. Book the online vehicle pass on the district website first; entry runs in two slots, 6 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 6 pm. Take the early slot for the cloud line.
  • Baba Budangiri. The range where coffee was reportedly first planted in India, and a shrine revered by both Hindus and Muslims. The drive along the ridge is the attraction.
  • Kemmangundi, 55 km. A hill station and garden at about 1,430 metres with Z Point and Shanti Falls. The climb is steep and narrow.
  • Hebbe Falls. Inside Bhadra reserve near Kemmangundi. A forest department jeep is compulsory for the last stretch, which is rough, and the falls are best from July to October.
  • Kalhatti Falls. A temple built at the base of the drop, on the Baba Budangiri road. Small, quiet and atmospheric.
  • An estate walk. As in Coorg, the best free thing available. Ask the owner.
  • Bhadra wildlife sanctuary. Tigers, elephants and good birding, with safaris bookable through the forest department. Much less visited than Bandipur.

Where Should You Stay in Chikmagalur?

An estate homestay outside the town, in the Mudigere, Aldur, Kalasa or Mullayanagiri road belts. The town itself is a working district centre with nothing to recommend it to a visitor, and staying there removes the whole point of the trip.

  • Mullayanagiri road and Attigundi. Closest to the peaks, with views towards the range. Steep approach roads.
  • Mudigere and Aldur. Working coffee country, lower altitude, lovely estates and the best value homestays in the district.
  • Kalasa and Horanadu. Further west towards Kudremukh. Remote, green and very quiet, with temple towns nearby.
  • Kemmangundi side. Higher and cooler, and closer to Hebbe Falls. Fewer properties and rougher roads.
  • What to ask. Detached cottage or room in the house, total room count, meals included, approach road condition, and whether groups are booked that weekend.
  • Price bands. Rs 3,000 to 5,000 for a budget homestay, Rs 5,000 to 9,000 for a good one with meals, Rs 12,000 plus for an estate resort with a pool.

“The food at a good Malnad homestay is the reason to come back. Nobody photographs it, and everybody remembers it.”

• On what Chikmagalur is actually best at

What Should You Eat in Chikmagalur?

Malnad food, which is the cuisine of the Western Ghats interior and is quite different from both coastal and Kodava cooking. Expect rice in several forms, coconut, plenty of local greens, and pork or chicken curries with a depth you will not find in a restaurant.

  • Kadubu and akki roti. Steamed rice dumplings and rice flatbread, both built for curry.
  • Malnad style chicken and pork. Slow cooked, coconut and black pepper forward. Ask what is being made rather than ordering.
  • Seasonal greens and bamboo shoot. Monsoon specialities that appear on homestay tables and nowhere else.
  • Fresh coffee. Buy from the estate. It will be better than anything you can get in the city and cheaper.
  • In town. A handful of decent places for a meal, but the homestay food is considerably better. Plan to eat where you sleep.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Chikmagalur?

October to February for clear skies and comfortable trekking, and June to September if you want the Ghats at their most spectacular for less money. Chikmagalur gets heavy monsoon rain, which is either the attraction or the problem depending on your temperament.

Season by Season

The district is genuinely two different places across the year.

October to February
Best weather. Clear peak views, good trekking, coffee harvest
June to September
Heavy rain, mist, waterfalls at full flow, rates 30 to 40 percent lower
March to May
Warm in the valleys, pleasant at altitude. Quiet and cheap
Best for Mullayanagiri views
November to February, early morning
Best for waterfalls
July to October
Coffee blossom
Usually March, after the first rains. Brief and worth seeing
Coffee harvest
November to January
Avoid
Long weekends and peak monsoon if you dislike leeches

What Does a Chikmagalur Trip From Bangalore Cost?

Rs 8,000 to 13,000 per person for two nights at a good estate homestay with meals, four people sharing a car. Fuel and tolls for the 500 km round trip run about Rs 4,800 for the car. It is consistently 15 to 25 percent cheaper than the equivalent trip to Coorg.

Two Nights, per Person

Four sharing a car, most meals included.

Budget homestay, monsoon
Rs 5,500 to 8,000
Good estate homestay with meals
Rs 8,000 to 13,000
Estate resort with a pool
Rs 15,000 to 25,000
Fuel and tolls, 500 km round trip
Rs 4,800 for the car
Overnight KSRTC bus
Rs 400 to 900 each way
Forest jeep to Hebbe Falls
Rs 600 to 1,200 per jeep
Shared jeep to Mullayanagiri
Rs 300 to 600 per person
Bhadra safari
Rs 500 to 2,000 per person

Can You Visit Chikmagalur Without a Car?

Yes, and more easily than Coorg, because Chikmagalur has rail access via Kadur and a limited direct service. Overnight KSRTC buses run from Bengaluru for Rs 400 to 900. Once there, shared jeeps run to Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri from town, and a full day taxi covers Kemmangundi.

The last mile to estate homestays is the constraint, as always in coffee country. Ask about pickup from the bus stand or Kadur station when booking, and most properties will arrange it.

Chikmagalur or Coorg: Which Should You Pick?

Coorg if you want a fuller itinerary and more choice of stays. Chikmagalur if you want a better drive, higher altitude, better food, fewer people and a lower bill. For a first trip to coffee country, Coorg is the safer choice. For a second, Chikmagalur is usually the better one.

  • Drive. Chikmagalur wins clearly. NH75 is better than the last 45 km into Madikeri.
  • Things to do. Coorg wins. More waterfalls, Dubare, Talakaveri, Nagarhole nearby.
  • Food. Chikmagalur, at a good homestay. Kodava food in Coorg is excellent but less consistently available.
  • Crowds and cost. Chikmagalur, comfortably. Fewer people and 15 to 25 percent cheaper.
  • Trekking. Chikmagalur. Mullayanagiri, Kudremukh and Bhadra give it more range than Tadiandamol alone.

FAQs

How far is Chikmagalur from Bangalore?

About 245 km, and four and a half to five hours via Nelamangala, Kunigal, Hassan and Belur on NH75. It is the best highway drive out of Bengaluru, with a genuine climb in the last stretch.

What is Chikmagalur famous for?

Coffee, and specifically the Baba Budangiri range where coffee was reportedly first planted in India. Also Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka at 1,930 metres, Kemmangundi, Hebbe Falls, Bhadra wildlife sanctuary and Malnad food.

How many days do you need in Chikmagalur?

Two nights. That gives you one full day for Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri, and a second for Kemmangundi and Hebbe Falls. Three nights lets you add Bhadra sanctuary or Kudremukh, and Belur and Halebidu fit neatly on the drive home.

Where should I stay in Chikmagalur?

An estate homestay outside the town, in the Mudigere, Aldur, Kalasa or Mullayanagiri road belts. The town itself is a working district centre with little for a visitor. Ask about the approach road, since several good properties sit at the end of rough estate tracks.

What is the best time to visit Chikmagalur?

October to February for clear peak views and comfortable trekking, and June to September if you want the Ghats at their greenest with rates 30 to 40 percent lower. March is worth catching for the brief coffee blossom.

Do I need a jeep for Hebbe Falls?

Yes. A forest department jeep is compulsory for the last stretch to Hebbe Falls, and it costs roughly Rs 600 to 1,200 per vehicle. The track is genuinely rough and private cars are not permitted on it.

Can you drive up Mullayanagiri?

Almost. A narrow road takes you close to the summit, after which there are roughly 400 steps up to the temple at the top. The road is steep with tight bends, so go early, drive carefully, and avoid it in heavy rain or fog. Since September 2025 you also need an online vehicle pass from the district website, booked for a 6 am to 12 noon or 1 pm to 6 pm slot.

Is Chikmagalur cheaper than Coorg?

Yes, consistently 15 to 25 percent cheaper for an equivalent stay. A good estate homestay with meals runs Rs 8,000 to 13,000 per person for two nights against Rs 9,000 to 15,000 in Coorg, and there are fewer people at every viewpoint.
