The Best Day Trips From Bangalore: Out by Seven, Home by Nine

Fifteen places within three hours, with the honest version of each: how long the drive really takes, what there is to see, and whether it is worth the day.

QUICK ANSWER

  • Leave before 6.30 AM: every day trip from Bengaluru is pleasant with an early start and miserable if you leave at nine.
  • Start back from your destination by about 3 PM, or wait until after 8 PM, to miss the evening traffic into the city.
  • For Mysore, leave by 6 AM, be at the palace when it opens, and start back by four.
  • Carry FASTag for highway tolls, and check weekly closures at temples, palaces and parks before you go.

Most of these are close enough that the drive out is the longest part of the day.

“Leave at six and the whole state opens up. Leave at nine and you have bought yourself a day in a car.”

• The single rule of day trips from this city

The best day trips from Bangalore are Mysore for a full day of palaces and markets, Nandi Hills for a sunrise, Shivanasamudra for waterfalls after the monsoon and Lepakshi for the best temple sculpture within reach of the city. All of them are doable in a day if you leave early.

This city's day trip map is unusually good. Within three hours you have a former royal capital, a UNESCO-adjacent temple complex, waterfalls, wildlife, granite hills, a fort town and a silk town, and the roads to most of them are genuinely good.

This guide sorts them by distance and tells you the two things that decide whether a day trip works: when to leave and what season to go.

What Is the Best Day Trip From Bangalore?

Mysore, at 145 km, and it is not particularly close. In a single day you can see one of India's grandest palaces, walk through Devaraja Market, climb Chamundi Hill and eat extremely well, and the road there is one of the better highways in the state.

Leave by 6 AM, be at the palace when it opens, do the market before lunch, take Chamundi Hill in the afternoon and start back by four. If you can make it an overnight instead, do; Mysore rewards a slower pace and its evenings are lovely.

What Are the Best Short Trips, Under 70 Km?

  • Nandi Hills. 60 km north. The classic sunrise trip. Leave by 4.30 AM, and go on a weekday if you possibly can.
  • Ramanagara. 50 km southwest. Granite hills, a vulture sanctuary and serious rock climbing country.
  • Savandurga. 50 km west. One of Asia's largest monoliths and a hard, exposed climb. Start at dawn.
  • Anthargange. 70 km northeast near Kolar. Volcanic rock formations and cave exploration. Carry a torch.
  • Bannerghatta. 22 km south. Zoo, safari and butterfly park. Go early on a weekday with children.

What Is Worth Seeing Between 70 and 150 Km?

  • Shivanasamudra. 135 km. Twin waterfalls on the Kaveri, Gaganachukki and Bharachukki. Spectacular from August to November, modest before the rains.
  • Talakadu. 130 km. Sand dunes and buried temples on the Kaveri, and one of the strangest and most atmospheric places in Karnataka.
  • Kolar. 70 km east. The gold fields town, with the Kolar Gold Fields site and Kotilingeshwara nearby.
  • Devarayanadurga. 70 km northwest near Tumkur. Hill temples and forest, and far quieter than the better known hills.
  • Kunti Betta. 130 km. A short rocky climb with excellent views, often combined with Mysore.
  • Melukote. 150 km. A hill temple town with real character and very few tourists on a weekday.
THE SIX AM RULE

Every day trip in this guide is pleasant if you leave before 6.30 AM and miserable if you leave at nine. Getting clear of Bengaluru is the hardest part of any of them.

What Is Worth the Longer Drive, 150 to 250 Km?

  • Lepakshi. About 120 km north in Andhra Pradesh. The Veerabhadra temple, its hanging pillar and the monolithic Nandi. The best temple sculpture within a day of the city.
  • Belur and Halebidu. Around 220 km. Hoysala temples with some of the finest stone carving in India. A long day, and worth it.
  • Sravanabelagola. About 145 km. The Gommateshwara monolith, reached by 600 steps. Combine with Belur and Halebidu if you are ambitious.
  • Bheemeshwari. 100 km. River camping, fishing and forest on the Kaveri.
  • Yelagiri. 160 km east in Tamil Nadu. A small, quiet hill station with a fraction of Ooty's crowds.

When Should I Go, and When Should I Not?

October to February for almost everything, August to November for the waterfalls, and avoid exposed sites in April and May. Season decides whether Shivanasamudra is a waterfall or a rock face.

  • October to February. Best window for everything on this list. Cool, clear and dry.
  • August to November. Waterfalls at their best. Shivanasamudra is genuinely spectacular in this window.
  • June to September. Green and beautiful in the Ghats direction, slower on the roads.
  • March to May. Hill stations only. Skip Hampi, exposed monoliths and long walks in the sun.
  • Weekdays over weekends. Nandi Hills, Mysore and Bannerghatta are transformed by going on a Tuesday.

How Should I Plan the Driving?

  • Leave before 6.30 AM. Non-negotiable. The city takes twenty minutes to clear at six and ninety at nine.
  • Return by 3 PM or after 8 PM. Sunday evening traffic into Bengaluru from every direction is severe from about five.
  • Fuel before you leave. And carry FASTag for the highway tolls.
  • Eat on the highway. The Mysore, Tumkur and Hosur roads all have good highway restaurants. Plan a stop rather than hoping.
  • Trains for Mysore and Kolar. Genuinely comfortable, and it removes the drive entirely.
  • Check timings. Temples, palaces and parks close at various hours and some have weekly closures. Confirm before driving three hours.
