“Mysore is the only place near this city that works as a day trip, a weekend, and a three-day base. Nothing else is that flexible.”
• Why it is the default answer
Mysore is 145 km from Bangalore, about two and a half to three hours by road on the expressway or two hours by train. The palace is typically open 10 AM to 5.30 PM with entry Rs 100 for adults, and the essential list is the palace, Devaraja Market, Chamundi Hill and Mysore Zoo. Two nights is ideal, one day is enough.
Mysore has been the easy answer to the weekend question for as long as people have been leaving Bengaluru, and the expressway has made it easier still. What surprises people who go expecting only a palace is the rest: a genuinely great produce market, one of the best-run zoos in India, a food culture with strong opinions about dosa, and a bird sanctuary twenty minutes out.
This guide covers getting there, timings and fees, what to see, where to eat, day trips from the city, and the Dussehra question. It is the trip I recommend most often to people new to Bengaluru, and the one I still make twice a year.
Quick Information
Everything about Mysore that decides your plan, in one place, with no romance attached.
How Do You Get From Bangalore to Mysore?
By train, ideally. A dozen services a day cover the 145 km in two to two and a half hours for Rs 100 to 600, and you arrive in the middle of the city with no parking to worry about. Driving on the Bengaluru Mysuru expressway takes two and a half to three hours if you leave early, and up to four and a half on a Saturday mid-morning.
- Train. The Shatabdi and Vande Bharat are fastest and most comfortable. Any of the day expresses are cheaper and perfectly fine. Book ahead for weekends.
- Car. NH275 expressway. Excellent road, limited exits that punish a missed turn, and strict speed enforcement along much of it. Leave before 6.30 AM.
- Bus. Frequent KSRTC services including Airavat, roughly Rs 200 to 500 and three hours. Reliable and cheap.
- In Mysore. Autos, app cabs and the KSTDC city tour bus. The main sights cluster within a few kilometres, so you do not need a car.
- Best breakfast stop if driving. Maddur for vada, or the Ramanagara and Channapatna udupis. Both are open from 7 AM.
The train is genuinely the better option for Mysore. You arrive rested in the centre of town, you skip the expressway exits and the parking, and the fare is less than the fuel. This is one of the few trips from Bengaluru where a car is a liability.
What Are the Mysore Palace Timings and Entry Fee?
The palace is typically open from 10 AM to 5.30 PM, with entry Rs 100 for adults and Rs 50 for children aged 10 to 18, according to the palace board. Footwear comes off at the entrance, photography inside the main halls is restricted, and the audio guide is worth the extra charge.
- Go at opening. By midday the queue and the crowd inside both build considerably, particularly at weekends.
- Socks help. You walk barefoot on stone that gets hot in the afternoon. This is the single most useful thing I can tell you about the palace.
- The illumination. Around a hundred thousand bulbs light the facade on Sunday evenings and public holidays, 7 to 8 PM. Worth planning your weekend around.
- What to look for. The Durbar Hall, the Kalyana Mantapa with its stained glass ceiling, and the Dussehra procession paintings in the corridor.
- Time needed. Ninety minutes to two hours inside, plus the grounds and the temples within the complex.
What Else Should You See in Mysore?
Devaraja Market, Chamundi Hill, Mysore Zoo, St Philomena's Church and Jaganmohan Palace. If you only have one day, do the palace and the market in the morning and Chamundi Hill in the late afternoon.
- Devaraja Market. The best thing in Mysore after the palace and the most skipped. Flowers, bananas, sandalwood oil, kumkum and a working chaos. Go before 10 AM.
- Chamundi Hill, 13 km. The Chamundeshwari temple at the top, reached by road or a thousand steps. The Nandi statue two-thirds of the way up is worth a stop, and the view over the city at sunset is the best in Mysore.
- Mysore Zoo. Formally Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, and one of the oldest and best-run zoos in India. Three hours, usually closed on Tuesdays.
- St Philomena's Church. A neo-Gothic cathedral with twin spires, among the tallest in Asia. Twenty minutes.
- Jaganmohan Palace. Now an art gallery holding Raja Ravi Varma paintings and a good collection of royal artefacts. Quiet and underrated.
- Karanji and Kukkarahalli lakes. Both good for a walk and for birds, and the local antidote to a day of monuments.
“Skip Brindavan Gardens if you are pressed. Do not skip Devaraja Market. One is a fountain show, the other is Mysore.”
• The trade I would make every time
Where Should You Eat in Mysore?
Mylari for the butter dosa, Hotel RRR for a Mysore-style meal, Mahesh Prasad for tiffin and Guru Sweet Mart for Mysore pak. The city has a serious food culture and strong local disagreements about which Mylari is the real one, which you should enjoy rather than try to resolve.
- Mylari dosa. Soft, thick, butter-heavy and nothing like a Bengaluru dosa. There are competing establishments of the same name, and each has partisans. Try one, then argue.
- Hotel RRR. Non-vegetarian and vegetarian Mysore-style meals on a banana leaf. Reliable and busy.
- Mahesh Prasad and Vinayaka Mylari. Tiffin institutions, best in the morning.
- Guru Sweet Mart. For Mysore pak, made where the sweet was reportedly invented in the palace kitchens. Buy it fresh and eat it the same day.
- Depth of Field and the newer cafes. Mysore now has a small, good coffee scene, which is a recent and welcome development.
- What to bring home. Mysore pak, sandalwood soap and oil from the government emporium, and silk from KSIC if you are shopping seriously.
What Are the Best Day Trips From Mysore?
Srirangapatna, Ranganathittu, Somanathapura, Talakad and Balmuri, all within 40 km. This is what turns Mysore from a day trip into a proper two or three night base, and it is the part most visitors never get to.
- Srirangapatna, 20 km. Tipu Sultan's island fort, the Daria Daulat Bagh summer palace, the Gumbaz and the Ranganathaswamy temple. Half a day, and genuinely interesting.
- Ranganathittu, 22 km. The best bird sanctuary within reach of Bengaluru. Boat rides among painted storks, pelicans, ibises and marsh crocodiles. Nesting season June to October.
- Somanathapura, 35 km. The Keshava temple, the most complete of the three great Hoysala temples. Astonishing carving and very few people.
- Talakad, 45 km. Temples that were buried under sand and excavated, on a bend of the Kaveri. Strange and atmospheric.
- Balmuri and Edmuri, 15 km. Low check-dam falls, shallow and safe, popular with families.
- Brindavan Gardens, 20 km. Dated but still a hit in the evening when the fountains are lit. Very busy at weekends.
Is It Worth Visiting Mysore During Dussehra?
Yes, once, if you plan two months ahead. Mysore Dussehra runs for ten days in September or October and is among the great festivals in India, ending with the Jamboo Savari procession of decorated elephants through the city. It is also the single worst time to arrive without a hotel booking.
- Book two months out. Hotel rates rise sharply and availability disappears. The train fills too.
- The procession. On Vijayadashami, the final day. Crowds are enormous. Paid seating exists and is worth it.
- The palace at night. Illuminated every evening through the festival, which is the easiest part to enjoy.
- If you cannot get a room. Day trip by train from Bengaluru and return the same night. Entirely feasible with the evening services.
- Alternative. Go the week before Dussehra. The city is decorated, the palace is lit, and you can actually move.
What Does a Mysore Trip Cost?
Rs 4,000 to 8,000 per person for two nights including travel, a mid-range hotel and food. It is the best value proper trip from Bengaluru, and going by train rather than car makes it cheaper still.
Costs
Per person, two nights, mid-range hotel.
