The Best Weekend Getaways From Bangalore, Sorted by How Far You Can Face Driving

Hills, coffee estates, ruins, beaches and waterfalls, all within a weekend. Organised by distance, because that is the only variable that actually decides where you go.

QUICK ANSWER

  • Under 100 km from Bengaluru: Nandi Hills, Ramanagara, Savandurga, Skandagiri and Anthargange.
  • Mysore, 145 km away, is the best full day trip; Coorg, Ooty and Wayanad sit 200 to 300 km out.
  • For Nandi Hills sunrise, about 60 km north, leave by 4.30 AM and go on a weekday if you can.
  • Leave the city before 6 AM on Saturday, and avoid the Friday 6 to 8 PM window and Sunday evening return.

Coffee country begins about four hours west of the city, and it changes everything about a Saturday.

“Bengaluru's greatest luxury is not the weather. It is that four hours in almost any direction gets you somewhere genuinely worth being.”

• Why people stay in this city

The best weekend getaway from Bangalore depends entirely on how far you will drive: Nandi Hills at 60 km for a sunrise, Mysore at 145 km for a full day, Coorg or Chikmagalur at four to six hours for a proper two-night trip, and the coast at seven or eight for the once-a-season escape.

This city sits at the centre of one of the best weekend maps in India. Within a single tank of fuel you can reach hill stations, coffee estates, world heritage ruins, tiger reserves, beaches and waterfalls, and the road network to most of them is genuinely good.

This guide sorts everything by driving distance, tells you what each place is actually for, and covers when to go, because half these destinations are wonderful in one season and pointless in another.

What Are the Best Day Trips Under 100 Km?

Nandi Hills for sunrise, Ramanagara and Savandurga for rocks and climbing, Skandagiri for a night trek. All of these are close enough to leave after breakfast and be home for dinner, or in the case of Nandi Hills, home before most people have woken up.

  • Nandi Hills. About 60 km north. The classic Bengaluru sunrise trip. Leave by 4.30 AM to beat both the crowd and the gate queue, and go on a weekday if you can.
  • Ramanagara. About 50 km southwest. Granite hills, vulture sanctuary, and the rock formations that appeared in Sholay.
  • Savandurga. Around 50 km west. One of Asia's largest monolith hills, and a serious morning climb.
  • Skandagiri. About 70 km north. Night trek to a sunrise above the clouds, popular with the city's hiking groups.
  • Anthargange. Around 70 km northeast, near Kolar. Cave exploration among volcanic rock formations.
  • Kanakapura road. South of the city. Resorts, river spots and the easiest escape when you do not want to drive far.
THE NANDI HILLS RULE

Weekend mornings at Nandi Hills now involve a genuine traffic queue up the hill road. Either go on a weekday or accept that you are joining a few thousand other people with the same idea.

What Are the Best Trips Between 100 and 200 Km?

Mysore above all, then the waterfalls and river country to the south. This band is where a comfortable single overnight or a very full day trip lives.

  • Mysore. 145 km. The palace, Devaraja Market, Chamundi Hill and some of the best food in Karnataka. Doable in a long day, much better as an overnight.
  • Shivanasamudra. About 135 km. Twin waterfalls on the Kaveri, spectacular after the monsoon and modest before it.
  • Bheemeshwari. Around 100 km. River camping and fishing country on the Kaveri.
  • Yelagiri. About 160 km east in Tamil Nadu. A small, quiet hill station with far fewer crowds than Ooty.
  • Talakadu. Around 130 km. Sand dunes and buried temples on the Kaveri, and one of the strangest places in the state.

What Are the Best Two Night Trips, 200 to 300 Km?

Coorg for coffee estates, Wayanad for forest, Ooty for the classic hill station and Bandipur or Nagarhole for wildlife. This is the sweet spot for a Friday evening departure and a Sunday evening return.

  • Coorg, or Kodagu. Roughly 250 km. Coffee estates, homestays, waterfalls and Kodava food. The default Bengaluru weekend, for good reason.
  • Wayanad. About 270 km in Kerala. Forest, tea, caves and a completely different landscape from Karnataka's plateau.
  • Ooty and Coonoor. Around 270 km. The Nilgiris, the toy train and colonial hill station architecture. Coonoor is quieter and better.
  • Bandipur and Nagarhole. About 220 to 240 km. Tiger reserves with genuine wildlife sightings. Book safaris in advance.
  • BR Hills. Around 200 km. Wildlife, temples and considerably fewer visitors than the bigger reserves.

What Is Worth Driving More Than 300 Km For?

Hampi, Chikmagalur, Gokarna and Kabini, and each of them justifies the drive. This band needs a three day weekend or a very committed two days.

  • Hampi. About 340 km. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire. Extraordinary, and best between November and February. An overnight train is the civilised way to do it.
  • Chikmagalur. Around 240 to 280 km depending on route. Karnataka's coffee heartland, Mullayanagiri, and the origin point of coffee in India.
  • Sakleshpur. About 220 km. Coffee and pepper estates, the Western Ghats railway line, and superb in the monsoon.
  • Gokarna. Around 480 km. Beaches, temple town, and the calmer alternative to Goa. Best October to February.
  • Kabini. About 220 km. River, forest lodges and some of the best wildlife viewing in south India.
  • Pondicherry. Around 310 km. French quarter, beaches and cafes. A different country, briefly.

When Should I Go Where?

Coffee country and waterfalls in the monsoon, hills and coast in winter, and nothing at all in Hampi during summer. Season matters more here than most weekend guides admit.

  • Monsoon, June to September. Coorg, Chikmagalur, Sakleshpur and the waterfalls are at their best. Roads are slower and leeches are real.
  • Post-monsoon, October to November. Waterfalls still full, weather clearing. The best all-round window.
  • Winter, December to February. Peak season everywhere. Hampi, Gokarna, the Nilgiris and wildlife reserves are all at their best.
  • Summer, March to May. Hill stations only. Ooty, Coorg and the Nilgiris. Avoid Hampi entirely.
  • Long weekends. Book accommodation weeks ahead. Coorg, Chikmagalur and Ooty fill completely.

How Should I Plan the Drive?

Leave before 6 AM or after 8 PM, and never in the Friday evening window. Getting out of Bengaluru is often the hardest part of any weekend trip, and the timing of your departure matters more than your route.

  • Leave early. 5 to 6 AM on a Saturday gets you clear of the city in twenty minutes rather than ninety.
  • Friday night departures. Leave after 8.30 PM or not at all. The 6 to 8 PM window on any highway out of the city is the worst driving in Karnataka.
  • Fuel and tolls. Fill up before you leave the city. Most highways have FASTag tolls.
  • Return timing. Sunday evening traffic into Bengaluru is severe from about 5 PM. Leave your destination at lunchtime or after 8 PM.
  • Trains. Genuinely good for Mysore, Hampi and the coast, and far less stressful than driving.
  • Book stays ahead. Homestays in Coorg and Chikmagalur are small and fill early. Do not improvise on a long weekend.
