The Best Hill Stations Near Bangalore, Ranked by What You Actually Want From a Hill

Twelve hill stations within reach of this city, from a 60 km sunrise to a nine-hour drive into Kerala. Which one suits your weekend, your budget and your tolerance for hairpins.

QUICK ANSWER

  • Nandi Hills is the half-day option; Coorg, Chikmagalur, Ooty and Wayanad need a weekend.
  • Roads through the Bandipur reserve close from roughly 9 PM to 6 AM, so drive the Ooty and Wayanad routes in daylight.
  • Shiradi and Charmadi ghats close for landslides in the monsoon, so check before heading to the coast side.
  • Budgets range from under Rs 7,000 per person at Yelagiri to over Rs 25,000 for a Coorg resort on a long weekend.

Bengaluru sits at 900 metres. Everything on this list is higher, cooler and, in at least four cases, worth the drive.

“Living at 900 metres spoils you. It also means that a hill station has to work quite hard before it feels like a change of climate.”

• Why Bengaluru is a tough audience

The best hill stations near Bangalore are Coorg at 250 km, Chikmagalur at 245 km, Ooty at 270 km, Yelagiri at 160 km for a short trip, Kodaikanal at 460 km for a long one, and Nandi Hills at 60 km if you only have a morning. Coorg and Chikmagalur are the two that most consistently justify the drive.

This city has an unusual problem with hill stations. Because Bengaluru itself sits on a plateau at nine hundred metres, a place has to be genuinely high and genuinely wet before it feels different. That rules out several hill stations that market themselves hard and delivers a shortlist that is smaller than the tourism brochures suggest.

So this guide sorts by what you are actually after: a cool climate, a view, a coffee estate, a trek, or somewhere your parents and children will both be comfortable. Each entry has the distance, the realistic drive time, the season and the honest verdict.

Quick Information

Twelve hills, one table, and the arithmetic that stops you booking a nine-hour drive for a single night.

Nandi Hills
60 km, 1.5 hours, 1,478 m. Sunrise only, not a stay

220 km, 4.5 hours, 950 m. Monsoon specialist
Chikmagalur

Coorg or Madikeri
250 km, 5 to 6 hours, 1,170 m. The all-rounder
Ooty
270 km, 6 to 7 hours, 2,240 m. The classic, and the most crowded
Coonoor
260 km, 6 hours, 1,850 m. Ooty without the fairground

Which Is the Best Hill Station Near Bangalore?

Coorg, for a first trip, and Chikmagalur if you have already done Coorg. Coorg gives you the fullest package: coffee estates, waterfalls, an elephant camp, decent roads and homestays at every budget. Chikmagalur is higher, quieter, greener and has better food, but less to fill an itinerary with, which some people consider the point.

  • Coorg, 250 km. Abbey and Iruppu falls, Dubare elephant camp, Talakaveri, Raja's Seat, Nagarhole on the edge. Stay outside Madikeri town, towards Siddapur or Kakkabe.
  • Chikmagalur, 245 km. Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka at 1,930 metres, Baba Budangiri, Kemmangundi, Hebbe Falls. Homestay food here is the sleeper attraction of the region.
  • The tie-breaker. If you want things to do, Coorg. If you want to sit on a verandah with coffee and see nobody, Chikmagalur.
GOOD TO KNOW

Coorg on a long weekend is a traffic study with a viewpoint attached. Madikeri town centre backs up badly and the estate roads are single-lane. Book three weeks ahead and stay well outside town.

What Is the Closest Hill Station to Bangalore?

Nandi Hills at 60 km, though it is a viewpoint rather than a hill station. For somewhere you can actually stay the night, Yelagiri at 160 km is the closest, and BR Hills at 180 km is the closest that feels genuinely remote.

  • Nandi Hills, 60 km. Sunrise, a fort, Tipu's drop and a canteen. Ninety minutes each way, done by 10 AM. Weekdays only if you want quiet.
  • Yelagiri, 160 km. Tamil Nadu, 14 hairpins, a lake, a paragliding season and honest low prices. Not dramatic, but genuinely easy with children or elderly parents.
  • BR Hills, 180 km. Biligiriranga. A hilltop temple, a wildlife sanctuary and a Jungle Lodges property. The quietest thing on this list at under 200 km.
  • Skandagiri, 70 km. Not a hill station, a night trek. Included because people search for it in the same breath, and because it is better than Nandi Hills if you are fit.

Is Ooty Worth Visiting From Bangalore?

Yes, in December and January, and no in April and May. Ooty at 2,240 metres is the highest and coldest thing within a weekend of this city, and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam is one of the genuinely great train journeys in India. In summer it becomes the holiday destination for three states at once.

  • Go for the railway. The UNESCO-listed metre gauge line from Mettupalayam to Coonoor and Ooty, with a rack and pinion section. Book weeks ahead.
  • Stay in Coonoor instead. 1,850 metres, twenty minutes down the hill, half the crowd, better tea estates and Sim's Park. This is the move.
  • Or Kotagiri. The quietest of the three Nilgiri towns, and where people who are tired of Ooty go.
  • The drive. Via Mysore, Gundlupet and Bandipur, then 36 numbered hairpins up from Masinagudi. Reserve roads close around 9 PM, so plan daylight.

“Ooty in May is a fairground at altitude. Coonoor in December is a hill station. Same mountains, forty minutes apart.”

• On the Nilgiris

Which Hill Station Near Bangalore Is Best in the Monsoon?

Sakleshpur, and it is not close. At 220 km up NH75, it is the most reliably wet, green and dramatic place within a weekend of this city between June and September. Bisle Ghat viewpoint on a clear monsoon morning is among the best views in Karnataka.

  • Sakleshpur, June to September. Coffee and pepper estates, the Bisle reserve forest, waterfalls everywhere and homestays that lean into the rain.
  • Coorg and Chikmagalur, July to September. Both are at their most beautiful in the rain. Leeches on the trails, mist on the roads, and almost no crowds.
  • Agumbe, 360 km. The wettest place in south India, and the sunset point is famous for a reason. For the properly rain-committed.
  • What to avoid. Exposed rock treks, Nandi Hills in heavy cloud, and any ghat drive after dark during heavy rain. Shiradi and Charmadi both close for landslides.

Which Hill Stations Work for Families With Children or Elderly Parents?

Yelagiri, Ooty, Coorg and Kodaikanal, in that order of ease. The variables that matter are the length of the ghat section, whether the attractions require walking on uneven ground, and whether there is food that suits everyone.

  • Yelagiri. Three and a half hours, 14 gentle hairpins, a boating lake, low prices. The easiest hill trip from this city with a mixed-age group.
  • Ooty. Botanical gardens, the lake, the toy train, and hotels with lifts and heating. Crowded, but genuinely equipped for families.
  • Coorg. Works well if you pick a resort rather than a remote estate homestay. Dubare elephant camp is a reliable hit with children.
  • Harder than it looks. Chikmagalur estate stays often involve rough approach roads and steep property layouts. Sakleshpur homestays are similar. Ask before booking.

What Do Hill Station Trips From Bangalore Cost?

Rs 8,000 to 14,000 per person for two nights at a mid-range homestay with meals, assuming four people sharing a car. Yelagiri and BR Hills come in lower, Ooty in December and Coorg resorts on long weekends come in much higher.

Two Nights, per Person

Four sharing a car, homestay or mid-range hotel, most meals included.

Yelagiri
Rs 4,500 to 7,000
BR Hills
Rs 9,000 to 14,000 at Jungle Lodges, safaris included
Sakleshpur
Rs 7,000 to 11,000
Chikmagalur
Rs 8,000 to 13,000
Coorg
Rs 9,000 to 15,000, double that at a resort on a long weekend
Ooty or Coonoor
Rs 9,000 to 16,000
Kodaikanal
Rs 11,000 to 18,000, mostly because of the drive
Munnar
Rs 15,000 to 25,000. Needs four nights to make sense

How Do You Reach Hill Stations Near Bangalore Without a Car?

KSRTC and the state transport corporations run overnight and morning services to almost every hill town on this list: Madikeri, Chikmagalur, Sakleshpur, Ooty, Yelagiri and Kodaikanal all have direct buses. The gap is the last mile, because the estate stays and viewpoints sit 10 to 25 km outside the towns with nothing running to them.

The workaround is to pick a stay in or near the town and use local autos and taxis for day trips, or to book a homestay that offers pickup from the bus stand. Several Chikmagalur and Coorg properties do. There is a fuller version of this in the guide to visiting places near Bangalore without a car.
