Terminal 2 is one of the more pleasant airport buildings in the world. Getting to it is the hard part.

“The flight is the easy part. The drive is the part that makes people miss flights.”

• Every Bengaluru resident, on airport runs

Kempegowda International Airport sits about 35 km north of central Bengaluru, has two terminals, and has no metro connection as of 2026. Allow two hours from the centre and two and a half from the south of the city for an evening departure, and considerably less if you are travelling before dawn.

Terminal 2, which opened in 2022, has been widely praised for its garden design and is genuinely one of the more pleasant airport buildings anywhere. Terminal 1 continues to operate alongside it, and which one you use depends on your airline and route, so check your ticket rather than assuming.

This guide covers getting there, which terminal is which, how early to arrive and the facilities worth knowing about.

How Do I Get to Bangalore Airport?

A Vayu Vajra bus if you are travelling light, a cab if you are not, and there is no metro option yet. The Blue Line that will eventually connect the airport is under construction, so anyone telling you about an airport metro is describing a plan rather than a train.

  • Vayu Vajra buses. BMTC's air conditioned airport service, roughly Rs 150 to Rs 400, running on multiple routes from across the city and operating through the night. Comfortable, reliable and enormously underused by visitors.
  • Cabs. Roughly Rs 800 to Rs 1,500. Pre-book for early departures. On arrival, use the organised pickup at the terminal.
  • Driving. Viable, but airport parking plus the return leg usually costs more than a cab in both money and hassle.
  • Journey times. One hour from north Bengaluru, ninety minutes from the centre, and up to two and a half hours from the south in evening traffic.
  • Night travel. The road is clear and the run is fast. A 3 AM departure from the centre can take forty five minutes.
THE TWO HOUR BUFFER

From central or south Bengaluru for an evening flight, budget two to two and a half hours for the journey alone, before check-in time. This is the single most common way people miss flights here.

Which Terminal Do I Need?

Check your ticket, because Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are separate buildings and arriving at the wrong one costs you time you may not have. Airlines and routes are allocated between them and the allocation has changed since Terminal 2 opened.

  • Terminal 2. The newer building, opened in 2022, designed around gardens and bamboo. Handles a substantial share of both domestic and international traffic.
  • Terminal 1. The original terminal, still fully operational.
  • Transfers. A free shuttle runs between the terminals. Allow extra time if you are connecting between them.
  • Check in advance. Terminal allocation is on your booking and the airline's app. Confirm the day before you fly.

How Early Should I Arrive?

Two hours before a domestic flight and three before an international one, and add your travel time on top of that. Bengaluru's airport is efficient, but security queues at peak hours are real.

  • Domestic. Two hours is comfortable. Ninety minutes works with hand baggage and web check-in if you are confident.
  • International. Three hours, and do not economise on this.
  • Peak hours. Early morning, roughly 5 to 8 AM, and evening, roughly 6 to 10 PM, are the busiest at both terminals.
  • Web check-in. Always. It saves you the counter queue entirely if you have hand baggage only.
  • DigiYatra. The facial recognition based entry system operates here and speeds up the terminal entry and security process considerably.

What Facilities Are at the Airport?

  • Food. Extensive at both terminals, including Indian and international options. Prices are airport prices.
  • Lounges. Available at both terminals, accessible through cards, airline status or paid entry.
  • Sleeping and transit. There are hotel and transit accommodation options at and near the airport, useful for very early departures.
  • Wifi. Free, with the usual one-time-password registration.
  • Shopping and duty free. Substantial, particularly in Terminal 2.
  • Terminal 2's gardens. Worth arriving slightly early for. It is a genuinely pleasant building to wait in, which is not a sentence one writes about many airports.

Where Should I Stay If I Have an Early Flight?

North Bengaluru, in Hebbal, Yelahanka, Jakkur or out towards Devanahalli. Staying near the airport the night before a dawn flight is often cheaper than the alternative once you account for a 3 AM cab from the south of the city.

If you are visiting Bengaluru and flying out early, planning your last night in the north is a small logistical decision that removes a great deal of stress. Our neighbourhoods guide covers what the northern areas are actually like.
