Bengaluru sits beside one of India's biggest garment clusters. Paying full retail here is a choice.

“This city stitches clothes for half the world's brands. If you are paying mall prices for a cotton shirt, you are paying for the air conditioning.”

• On the geography of a Bengaluru wardrobe

Clothes shopping in Bengaluru splits into four very different economies, and most people only ever use one of them. There is the wholesale fabric trade in Chickpet, the street and surplus trade around Commercial Street and Jayanagar, the brand and mall layer, and the boutique and designer layer in Indiranagar, Sadashivanagar and UB City. The same body can be dressed for five hundred rupees or fifty thousand depending purely on which of those you walk into.

What makes the city unusual is the garment manufacturing base sitting right next to it. Export surplus, overruns and seconds from units that supply international labels flow into the local market continuously, which is why a footpath here can carry better cotton than a mid market showroom.

This guide goes budget by budget, then occasion by occasion: everyday wear, office clothes, ethnic wear, wedding buying and the tailoring option that most newcomers ignore for two years and then never stop using.

Where Should I Buy Everyday Clothes in Bangalore?

Export surplus shops and the lanes off Commercial Street, for the simple reason that they sell the same garments the brands sell, made in the same units, without the label or the markup.

You will find surplus concentrated in the Commercial Street side lanes, across Jayanagar 4th Block, along parts of Brigade Road, and in small shops scattered through almost every residential neighbourhood in the city. Quality varies enormously between shops and even between racks, so the skill is inspection rather than location.

If you want the process to be comfortable rather than cheap, the mall brands cover everyday wear perfectly well and their January and July end of season sales are genuinely worth waiting for. There is no virtue in suffering through a crowded lane if your time is worth more than the difference.

Where Do I Buy Office and Formal Clothes?

  • Brand showrooms, for reliability. Brigade Road, Commercial Street and every major mall carry the formal shirt and trouser brands. Consistent sizing, returns, and alterations usually included.
  • Surplus plus a tailor, for value. Buy well made surplus shirts and have the fit adjusted. The result outperforms anything at the same price in a showroom.
  • Chickpet suiting and shirting, for the full custom route. Buy the cloth by the metre and have it stitched. This is how a serious formal wardrobe is built here, and it is not expensive.
  • Bespoke tailors, for suits. The Cantonment area and the older neighbourhoods carry tailors who have been cutting suits for decades. Ask for references and allow time for two fittings.
  • UB City and the luxury floor, for the top end. International formal labels, priced accordingly, with the service to match.
  • Footwear alongside. Commercial Street and Brigade Road for formal shoes across price points, with the brand showrooms clustered on the main strips.

“The best dressed people I know in this city are not buying expensive clothes. They are buying decent cloth and paying a tailor four hundred rupees.”

• On the local advantage nobody uses

Where Should I Buy Ethnic and Traditional Wear?

Commercial Street for ready to wear across every price point, Jayanagar 4th Block and Malleshwaram for the traditional showrooms, and Chickpet if you are buying fabric to be stitched.

For kurtas, salwar sets, lehengas and sherwanis off the rack, Commercial Street has the range and the price ladder. For sarees, the serious buying happens in Chickpet, where wholesale choice is unmatched, or at the established showrooms on MG Road, Jayanagar and Malleshwaram where somebody will actually help you choose and the silk comes with the paperwork.

Wedding buying deserves its own trip, ideally two: one to look, one to buy. Go on weekday mornings, go with somebody who knows fabric, and budget separately for blouse stitching, falls and pico work, which is fast and cheap here but adds up across a trousseau.

Where Are the Boutiques and Indian Designers?

Indiranagar first, then Sadashivanagar, Vasanth Nagar, Richmond Town and the lanes around Lavelle Road. Bengaluru's boutique scene is spread across residential streets rather than concentrated in one district, and much of the best of it is in converted houses rather than shopfronts.

  • Indiranagar 100 Feet Road and its lanes. The densest concentration of homegrown labels, concept stores and design retail in the city. Walk the side streets, not just the main road.
  • Sadashivanagar and Vasanth Nagar. Quieter studios, strong on occasion wear and Indian couture, often better visited by appointment.
  • Lavelle Road and Richmond Town. A mix of designer stores and multi label boutiques within walking distance of UB City.
  • Jayanagar and Basavanagudi. Traditional boutiques and long established tailoring houses with a very different clientele and much gentler pricing.
  • Koramangala. Younger labels, sustainable and slow fashion brands, and a good concentration of studio retail in the 5th and 6th Blocks.
  • Pop ups and exhibitions. A great deal of Bengaluru's independent fashion sells through periodic exhibitions at hotels and event spaces rather than through permanent stores. Worth following the ones you like.

Is It Worth Getting Clothes Tailored in Bangalore?

Yes, and it is the single biggest upgrade available to a wardrobe here. Tailoring is inexpensive, widely available and generally quick, and the city has fabric markets that make the whole exercise cheaper than buying ready to wear of comparable quality.

  • Start with alterations, not commissions. Take one garment you already own and like. A tailor who can adjust it well is a tailor you can trust with cloth.
  • Buy fabric in Chickpet. Shirting, suiting, cotton, linen and blouse pieces at trade prices, with far more choice than any showroom.
  • Bring a reference garment. Measurements are interpreted differently by every tailor. A sample that fits you settles the argument.
  • Agree the delivery date and the price first. Both, out loud, at the counter. Festive season stretches timelines considerably.
  • Expect a fitting. For anything structured, one fitting before final stitching is normal and worth insisting on.
  • Blouse stitching is its own craft. Saree blouses are specialised work, and the good blouse tailors have waiting lists during wedding season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place for clothes shopping in Bangalore?

Commercial Street, for the widest range at the widest price spread in one walkable district, from pavement stalls to brand showrooms. For fabric and sarees at wholesale prices, Chickpet. For boutiques and Indian labels, Indiranagar. For brands with returns and trial rooms, any of the big malls.

Where can I buy cheap clothes in Bangalore?

The Majestic and Gandhi Nagar pavement trade is the cheapest in the city, followed by the side lanes off Commercial Street and the export surplus shops in Jayanagar and across residential neighbourhoods. Chickpet is cheapest of all if you are buying fabric and having it stitched rather than buying finished garments.

What is export surplus clothing and where do I find it in Bangalore?

Export surplus is stock from garment units supplying international brands, sold locally as overruns, cancelled orders or seconds. Bengaluru has a large garment manufacturing base, so the supply is genuine and constant. Look in the Commercial Street side lanes, Jayanagar 4th Block, parts of Brigade Road and small neighbourhood shops. Check seam finishing and fabric weight, and expect a minor defect.

Where do I buy fabric in Bangalore?

Chickpet and the lanes around BVK Iyengar Road, which form one of the largest textile trade quarters in South India. Shirting, suiting, cotton, silk, blouse pieces, lining and trim at wholesale prices. Go by metro to Chickpete station on a weekday morning, and check whether a shop has a minimum cut length before choosing.

Is tailoring cheap in Bangalore?

Yes, and it is widely available. Alterations cost very little and usually take a day or two, and full stitching from your own fabric is generally far cheaper than ready to wear of the same quality. Buying cloth in Chickpet and having it stitched locally is the best value route to a wardrobe that actually fits.

Where can I buy branded clothes in Bangalore?

Brigade Road and Commercial Street for high street brands on a street, and the big malls for the widest selection under one roof: Phoenix Mall of Asia at Hebbal, Phoenix Marketcity and VR Bengaluru in the east, Orion and Lulu in the west, Nexus Koramangala in the south. UB City handles international luxury.

When are the clothing sales in Bangalore?

The two end of season sales in January and July are when brands clear stock most seriously, and the festive stretch from Dussehra to Diwali brings widespread offers, particularly on ethnic wear. Wedding season pushes silk and occasion wear prices up rather than down, so buy those in the quieter months if you can.

Where do I buy wedding clothes in Bangalore?

Chickpet for fabric and sarees at the best prices, the established showrooms on MG Road, Jayanagar 4th Block and Malleshwaram for silk with proper service and documentation, Commercial Street for ready to wear ethnic across budgets, and the Indiranagar and Sadashivanagar boutiques for stitched occasion wear. Allow two trips and budget separately for blouse stitching and finishing work.
