“Deepavali in Bengaluru is three days of lamps, sweets and relatives, followed by exactly two hours a night of crackers. The police have done the maths, and so should you.”
• Tariq Sallam
Deepavali 2026 in Bangalore falls on Sunday November 8 (Naraka Chaturdashi), Monday November 9 (Lakshmi Puja on the new moon night) and Tuesday November 10 (Balipadyami, the Karnataka government holiday). Crackers are allowed only between 8 PM and 10 PM on those three nights, and only certified green crackers. Licensed stalls sell from November 7 to 10.
That is the short version. The longer version involves your mother asking why you have not bought the sweets yet, your dog hiding under the bed from Saturday evening, and the annual Bengaluru debate about whether one more box of flowerpots really counts as tradition. I cannot help with the debate. I can help with everything else.
Below I have put together the dates, what the 2026 rules actually say, where to buy crackers legally, where to shop and soak up the festival, and the safety stuff that sounds boring until somebody's child is in an eye hospital at 9.30 PM. Bookmark it and forward it to the family group. They will ignore it, but you will have tried.
Quick Information
Two hours of crackers, three days of lights, and roughly four kilos of sweets per household. Your dentist and your dog would like a word.
When Is Deepavali 2026 in Bangalore?
Deepavali 2026 in Bengaluru runs over three days, from Sunday November 8 to Tuesday November 10. In Karnataka the festival is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi, then Lakshmi Puja on the new moon, then Balipadyami, and each day has its own rituals.
- The days before: Dhanteras shopping. Gold, silver and steel vessel shopping peaks just before the festival. Expect crowds at jewellers in Jayanagar, Malleshwaram and Commercial Street.
- Sunday, November 8: Naraka Chaturdashi. The day of the early-morning oil bath, new clothes and the first lamps. Because it falls on a Sunday, it is not on the state holiday list.
- Monday, November 9: Lakshmi Puja. Homes and businesses worship Lakshmi in the evening of the new moon. Many shops and offices do their own puja and close early.
- Tuesday, November 10: Balipadyami. The day associated with King Bali, with rangoli, lamps and in many homes a puja for cattle or for the household. This is the Karnataka government holiday.
Office holiday check: the state holiday is Tuesday November 10. Many private companies and some holiday lists also mark Monday November 9, but that depends on your employer. Banks follow their own list, so check your branch before you plan a cheque deposit.
What Are the Firecracker Timings in Bangalore for Deepavali 2026?
You can burst crackers in Bengaluru only between 8 PM and 10 PM, from November 8 to November 10. The Karnataka government fixed this two-hour window for the whole state, following Supreme Court directions, and Bengaluru police have repeated it in their Deepavali advisory.
Outside that window, bursting is not allowed. The police advisory says violations can invite legal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Explosives Act and pollution laws. No fine amounts have been announced, but I would not want to be the person explaining a 6 AM rocket to an inspector.
Are AI cameras really watching for crackers?
Yes. Bengaluru police plan to use more than 1,000 AI cameras across the city during Deepavali. They flag unusual heat, smoke and heavy crowding and send real-time alerts. Last year these cameras raised around a hundred alerts linked to late-night bursting, crowds and high temperatures, and dense areas with past complaints get extra attention this year.
Which Crackers Are Allowed in Bangalore in 2026?
Only green crackers are allowed in Karnataka this Deepavali. A genuine green cracker box carries the prescribed green cracker mark and a QR code. If the box has neither, it is not a green cracker in the eyes of the law and can be seized.
- Check the box before you pay. Look for the green logo and scan the QR code. If the shopkeeper gets defensive, that is your answer.
- Skip the giant bombs and long strings. They are the ones most likely to be illegal, and the ones your neighbours will remember.
- Remember green is not harmless. Eye doctors point out every year that green crackers can injure eyes just as badly as the old ones. Lower emissions, same sparks.
Enforcement is serious this year. District teams of police, fire, health, revenue and environment officials are inspecting shops and warehouses. A warehouse caught with banned crackers is sealed and criminal cases are filed, consignments of banned crackers from other states are being seized at the borders, and vehicles carrying them can be confiscated.
Where Can I Buy Crackers Legally in Bangalore?
Buy only from a licensed temporary cracker stall. For 2026, Bengaluru City Police and the Greater Bengaluru Authority approved 411 stall plots across 83 locations, up from 390 stalls at 79 locations last year, and sales are allowed from November 7 to November 10.
- Where. Approved locations are spread across the city and include Basavanagudi, Mahadevapura, Byatarayanapura and RT Nagar, usually on open grounds.
- How to tell a legal stall. A 10 by 10 feet stall on an approved ground with its licence displayed. Stalls that sprawl beyond that size face action.
- Timeline. Licences were issued through Seva Sindhu, with a lottery for crowded locations on November 4 and licences handed out on November 5. Stalls set up on November 6 and sell from November 7.
- Avoid online sellers and back-of-shop deals. Police are watching websites and social media for illegal cracker sales. If it is not a licensed stall, it is not your stall.
Where Should I Shop for Deepavali in Bangalore?
Go to the old markets for flowers, diyas and puja items, and to the big shopping streets for clothes and gifts. The old city gives you the atmosphere and the prices; the malls give you parking and air conditioning. Choose your suffering.
- KR Market. The city's flower market and the place for marigold strings, mango leaves, banana stems and every puja item you forgot. Go very early on November 8 or 9 for the best stock and the least shoving.
- Malleshwaram and Gandhi Bazaar. Old-Bengaluru festival shopping at its best: diyas, rangoli powder, flowers, sweets and the kind of crowd that makes it feel like Deepavali.
- Chickpet and Avenue Road. Silk sarees, dress material, lamps, brass and steel in bulk. Wear comfortable shoes and leave the car at home.
- Commercial Street and Jayanagar 4th Block. Clothes, accessories, gifts and jewellers. Busiest in the evenings right before the festival.
- Malls. Orion's three malls have their free Deepavali decor up until November 8, which is a decent outing if the family wants lights without the market chaos.
I am publishing a full Deepavali shopping guide with markets and budgets tomorrow, so if you want the detailed list of where to buy what, keep an eye on the Shopping section.
Where Can I Celebrate Deepavali in Bangalore?
Most of Bengaluru celebrates Deepavali at home and in its own neighbourhood: lamps on the balcony, rangoli at the gate, a puja, sweets with the neighbours and, for two hours a night, the community cracker session. If you want more than that, a few ideas.
- Your apartment or layout's common celebration. Many gated communities and resident welfare associations run a shared, supervised cracker session on an open ground. It is safer, it is social and it keeps the crackers away from parked cars.
- Temples. Neighbourhood temples are lit up and busy on Lakshmi Puja evening and Balipadyami. Go early, dress modestly and expect crowds.
- A lamps-only evening. The state is asking residents to light lamps and cut down on fireworks this year. A street full of diyas is honestly prettier than a street full of smoke.
- Malls and lights. The decorated malls are an easy family outing in the days before the festival. Check event schedules on the mall websites before you go.
How Do I Stay Safe During Deepavali in Bangalore?
Burst crackers in an open space, keep a bucket of water or sand next to you, never lean over a cracker that has not gone off, and keep children at a distance. Call 112 or 108 in an emergency. Most Deepavali injuries in this city happen to children and bystanders, and most of them are eye injuries.
Bengaluru hospitals report dozens of firecracker eye injuries every year, many in the first two days, and the government's Minto Ophthalmic Hospital has kept a dedicated ward ready in past years. In recent years the city's eye hospitals have together reported well over a hundred cases across the festival days.
- Pick an open ground. Not the road, not near parked vehicles, not on a crowded terrace. The police advisory specifically says to avoid main roads and crowded spots.
- Respect the no-burst zones. Stay away from hospitals, schools, religious places, petrol pumps, gas stations, old-age homes and childcare centres.
- Cotton, not synthetics. Loose synthetic clothes and dupattas catch fire fast. Tie hair back.
- Protect your eyes. Use long incense sticks or sparkler holders, keep a safe distance, and wear glasses if you have them.
- If an eye is injured. Do not rub it, do not press it and do not try to remove anything stuck in it. Cover it loosely and go to an eye hospital immediately.
- Burns. Cool a minor burn under clean running water for several minutes. No toothpaste, no butter, no ink, whatever your aunt says.
- Clean up. Collect cracker remains in a bucket, soak them in water or sand, and leave the ground clean for the kids who play there on Wednesday.
“The best Deepavali photo in your family album is the one where everybody still has both eyebrows.”

How Do I Keep My Pets and Street Animals Calm on Deepavali?
Keep pets indoors from early evening, close the windows and curtains, and leave a quiet corner with their bed and water. The police advisory also asks people not to disturb or harm animals, which covers the community dogs and cows on your street too.
- Walk dogs early. Get the evening walk done well before 8 PM.
- ID tags on. Frightened pets bolt. Make sure collars carry your phone number.
- Talk to your vet. If your pet panics badly every year, ask your vet about calming options this week, not on November 8.
- Never tie crackers to animals. It should not need saying. It is cruel and it is a crime.
What About Traffic and Air Quality During Deepavali?
Expect heavy traffic around markets, malls and temples from November 6 to 9, especially in the evenings, and lighter roads on the holiday itself. Take the metro to Majestic, Chickpet or Malleshwaram if you are shopping in the old city. Parking near KR Market and Chickpet is a myth.
Air quality usually dips across Bengaluru on the main cracker nights. If anyone at home has asthma, a heart condition or a newborn, keep windows closed during the 8 to 10 PM window and for a while after, and keep inhalers handy. This is also the most practical argument for lamps over crackers I know of.
