The Best Winter Getaways From Bangalore, for When Even This City Feels Too Warm

Ten trips for November to February, from a 60 km sunrise to a frosty Nilgiri morning, with distances, drive times, real costs and the passes and bookings nobody tells you about until the checkpost.

QUICK ANSWER

  • November to February is the best travel season around Bengaluru: dry roads, clear skies and cold mornings in the hills.
  • For real cold, go to the Nilgiris (Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri), where night temperatures have touched 0°C in recent Decembers and Januaries. Tourist vehicles need a free e-pass from epass.tnega.org.
  • For coffee country, Coorg and Chikmagalur are about 245 to 250 km away. Mullayanagiri needs an online vehicle booking on chikkamagaluru.nic.in.
  • Winter is the only sane season for Hampi and the coast. Book Christmas and New Year stays three to six weeks ahead.

Winter getaways from Bangalore: misty Western Ghats hills and a coffee estate road at sunrise in November

Mist rolling over coffee estates and hills on a winter morning near Bengaluru, the season for road trips out of the city.

“Bengaluru people do not own winter clothes. We own one hoodie, and we take it to Ooty once a year to prove it works.”

• Tariq Sallam

The best winter getaways from Bangalore for November to February are the Nilgiris (Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri) for proper cold, Coorg and Chikmagalur for misty coffee estates, Kabini and BR Hills for wildlife in comfortable weather, Hampi for ruins you can finally walk in daylight, and Gokarna or Pondicherry for the coast. Nandi Hills and Yelagiri work when you only have a day. All of them sit between 60 and 480 km from the city, and winter is the season when every one of them is at its best.

Here is the thing about Bengaluru winter. It arrives, everyone posts a photo of their breath at 6 AM, and by 11 AM it is 27 degrees and you are sweating in a jacket you dug out of a suitcase. If you actually want to feel cold, wear a monkey cap without irony and drink coffee because you need it rather than because it is 4 PM, you have to leave town.

So I sorted out the trips that are genuinely better between November and February, with real distances, honest drive times, what each one costs, and the boring admin (e-passes, online slots, forest road closures) that ruins a weekend if you find out about it at the checkpost. Pick by how much time you have, not by which reel you saw last.

Quick Information

The hills get cold, the coast gets calm and the ruins stop trying to cook you. The only thing that heats up is the price of a New Year's Eve room.

When Is Winter Travel Season From Bangalore?

Winter travel season from Bangalore runs from November to February, with December and January the coldest and clearest months. The northeast monsoon usually tapers off through November, which means the roads dry out, the hills hold onto their monsoon green for a few more weeks and the sky finally clears for views.

  • November. Green hills, the odd late shower and the best value of the season. Hotels have not yet switched to holiday pricing.
  • December. Cold mornings, clear days and the Christmas to New Year crunch. Prices peak from about December 20 to January 2.
  • January. The coldest nights in the Nilgiris, frost on the grass, and quieter roads once the Sankranti weekend passes.
  • February. Warming up, still dry, and the last comfortable month for Hampi and the coast before summer arrives.
GOOD TO KNOW

My rule: the trip you plan in October costs half of the trip you plan on December 18. Winter is short. The booking window is shorter.

Where Can I Feel Real Cold Near Bangalore?

For real cold near Bangalore, go to the Nilgiris: Ooty at about 2,240 m, Kotagiri at about 1,980 m and Coonoor at about 1,850 m. In recent Decembers and Januaries, night temperatures in and around Ooty have dropped to about 0°C during cold spells, and the grasslands near Thalaikundha and the Botanical Garden lawns turn white with frost.

Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri

Ooty is about 270 km and 6 to 7 hours from Bengaluru via Mysore and the Bandipur and Mudumalai forest roads. Coonoor is the calmer, prettier choice if you want tea estates and a quiet porch rather than boat rides and a fairground. Kotagiri is the quietest of the three and my pick if your idea of a holiday is a fireplace and nobody asking you anything.

  • E-pass. Tourist vehicles entering the Nilgiris need a free e-pass from epass.tnega.org, a system in place since 2024 under Madras High Court orders. Apply before you leave; signal at the border checkposts is unreliable.
  • Green tax. A separate entry fee is collected at the checkpost. Keep UPI ready and some cash as backup.
  • Forest roads. The Bandipur and Mudumalai stretch has a night closure, roughly 9 PM to 6 AM. Leave Bengaluru by 6 AM and you are fine.
  • Pack. A real jacket, a woollen cap and socks for the night. Your Bengaluru hoodie will not survive a Kotagiri morning.

Kodaikanal, If You Have Three Nights

Kodaikanal is beautiful in winter, but at about 460 km and 8 to 9 hours it is a long haul for a weekend. It also needs an e-pass for tourist vehicles. Save it for a long weekend and give it three nights, otherwise you will spend more time on the ghat road than on the lake.

Is Coorg or Chikmagalur Better in Winter?

Coorg and Chikmagalur are both excellent in winter, and the choice comes down to style: Coorg is the all-rounder with estate homestays and easy sights, while Chikmagalur has the better highway and the highest peaks in Karnataka. Winter is also coffee picking season in both, roughly from December, so estate walks are at their most interesting.

  • Coorg. About 250 km to Madikeri, 5 to 6 hours via Mysore and Kushalnagar. Stay on an estate near Siddapur, Virajpet or Kakkabe rather than in Madikeri town. Budget Rs 9,000 to 15,000 per person for two nights with meals and fuel.
  • Chikmagalur. About 245 km, 4.5 to 5 hours via Hassan. Mullayanagiri is 1,930 m, the highest point in Karnataka, and needs an online vehicle booking on chikkamagaluru.nic.in in one of two slots, 6 AM to 12 noon or 1 PM to 6 PM. Fees reported at launch were Rs 50 for a bike and Rs 100 for a car.
  • Sakleshpur. About 220 km. A monsoon specialist, but quiet and cheap in early winter if Coorg is booked out.

“A Coorg homestay in December is the only place a stranger will hand you coffee you did not order and you will thank them for it.”

• Tariq Sallam

My full Coorg guide and Chikmagalur guide have the routes, homestay areas and food lists in detail. For winter, add one thing: carry a layer for the evening. Estate bungalows are built for shade, not insulation.

What Are the Best Day Trips From Bangalore in Winter?

The best winter day trips from Bangalore are Nandi Hills for sunrise above the fog, Yelagiri for an easy hill drive, and Mysore for palaces in weather you can actually walk around in. Each works as an out-by-six, home-by-nine day.

  • Nandi Hills (about 60 km). Winter is fog season, which is the whole point. Toll at the Sultanpet gate is Rs 100 for a car and Rs 20 for a two-wheeler, and parking is extra, about Rs 100 for a car. Reach the gate well before sunrise; the queue forms before the sun does.
  • Yelagiri (about 160 km). A gentle hill station at about 1,048 m with a lake, short treks and none of the Ooty crowds. Good with kids and grandparents.
  • Mysore (about 145 km). Two and a half to three hours on the expressway, or a train. The palace, Chamundi Hill and Devaraja Market are far nicer at 25 degrees than at 36.

Is Winter the Best Time to Visit Hampi From Bangalore?

Yes, winter is the best time to visit Hampi, because November to February is the only stretch when walking its ruins in daylight is comfortable; in April and May it crosses 40 degrees with almost no shade. Hampi is about 340 km away, and the overnight train to Hosapete, roughly 8 hours, is the smartest way to get there.

Give it two full days at least, rent a scooter for Rs 400 to 600 a day, and do sunrise at Matanga hill and sunset at Hemakuta hill. Budget Rs 5,500 to 8,000 per person for two nights including the train. The state government has said Hampi Utsav will move to early November each year, so check Karnataka Tourism for the next edition before you plan around it. My Hampi guide has the full itinerary.

Which Beaches Near Bangalore Are Best in Winter?

The best beaches from Bangalore in winter are Gokarna, Udupi and Malpe, and Murudeshwar on the Karnataka coast, and Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram on the east coast. From October to February the sea is calmer, the sky is clear and the humidity drops enough that you will not need three showers a day.

  • Gokarna (about 480 km). The quiet alternative to Goa. Walk the beach trail from Kudle to Om. Take the overnight bus or train; ten hours of driving each way is a bad trade for two days of sea.
  • Udupi and Malpe (about 400 km). Temple food, a proper town beach and the boat to St Mary's Island and its basalt columns.
  • Pondicherry (about 310 km). Five and a half hours. More promenade and cafes than swimming, but the French Quarter on a cool December evening is hard to beat.

Where Can I See Wildlife in Winter Near Bangalore?

Kabini, about 220 km from Bangalore, is the best wildlife trip for winter comfort: mornings are cool, the forest is still green after the rains, and November to February is when safaris are most pleasant. Sightings are statistically better in the dry months of March to May, but winter wins on comfort and on scenery.

Safari slots run roughly 6 to 8.30 AM and 3.30 to 6 PM, and the evening boat safari on the backwaters is what makes Kabini different from every other park. Lodges cost Rs 20,000 to 40,000 a night all-inclusive for two, with forest department and Jungle Lodges properties as the budget option. BR Hills, about 180 km away, is a quieter alternative that mixes a hill with a wildlife sanctuary. See my Kabini guide before you book.

How Much Does a Winter Getaway From Bangalore Cost?

A winter getaway from Bangalore typically costs Rs 5,500 to 15,000 per person for two nights at a mid-range stay, including travel and food. Hampi by train sits at the bottom of that range, Coorg and the Nilgiris in the middle, and a Kabini lodge well above it.

  • Hampi: Rs 5,500 to 8,000 per person for two nights with the train.
  • Chikmagalur: Rs 8,000 to 13,000 per person for two nights with meals and fuel.
  • Coorg: Rs 9,000 to 15,000 per person for two nights with meals and fuel.
  • Hill stations generally: Rs 8,000 to 14,000 per person for two nights at a mid-range homestay.
  • Christmas and New Year: Expect higher rates and minimum-stay rules from about December 20. If a property asks for a three-night minimum, it is not personal.
GOOD TO KNOW

If money is your worry this season, the cheapest winter trip is a Sunday at Nandi Hills followed by breakfast on the way home. You get the fog, the photos and change from Rs 1,000.

What Should I Pack for a Winter Trip From Bangalore?

Pack in layers: a warm jacket, a woollen cap and gloves for the Nilgiris and Chikmagalur nights, and light cotton plus sunscreen for the day, because winter sun in the hills still burns. For Hampi and the coast, think summer clothes, a hat and plenty of water.

  • Documents. Driving licence, RC and insurance in DigiLocker, plus a screenshot of any e-pass or online booking. Checkposts do not care that your network dropped.
  • The car. Check tyres and brakes before ghat roads. Fog lamps help on early morning drives.
  • Cash and UPI. Hill towns have both, but forest roads and small homestays sometimes have neither signal nor card machine.
  • Timing. Leave Bengaluru by 6 AM. Every hour after 7 adds roughly an hour to the Mysore road.

Nandi Hills, about 60 km away, for sunrise above the winter fog. Leave around 4.30 AM, budget about Rs 200 for car toll and parking, and have breakfast on the way back.
