How Much Does It Cost to Run a Business in Bangalore? Three Worked Budgets

A solo consultant, a five person startup and a twenty person company, costed line by line. Space, salaries, compliance, software, insurance and the items founders always forget.

QUICK ANSWER

  • Setting up a business in Bengaluru costs a one off Rs 25,000 to 2 lakh for incorporation, signatures, documents and registrations.
  • A solo consultant runs roughly Rs 25,000 to 60,000 a month; a five person startup Rs 8 to 18 lakh including salaries.
  • An LLP or private limited costs Rs 8,000 to 25,000 including government fees, and GST registration is effectively mandatory once you invoice companies.
  • Budget for office deposits, notice period overlap and employer PF and ESI on top of gross salary.

A worried founder studies a bill at a desk piled with invoices, receipts, a calculator and a laptop showing a spreadsheet, the city skyline at dusk behind

The spreadsheet nobody builds until month four, by which point three of these lines are already a surprise.

“Founders budget for salaries and rent, then get surprised by compliance, insurance, software and the deposit. Those four are not small and they all arrive at once.”

• On why first year budgets are always wrong

Bengaluru is a reasonable place to run a business on cost, and the reason is not that any single item is cheap. Rent is not cheap by Indian standards. Engineering salaries are the highest in the country. What is favourable is the combination: a deep talent market, a mature supplier ecosystem, and workspace flexibility that lets you avoid large fixed commitments until you genuinely need them.

This guide gives three worked monthly budgets, because a generic cost list is useless. A solo consultant, a five person early stage company and a twenty person business have completely different cost structures, and the proportions matter more than the totals.

All figures are indicative and exclude the founders' own compensation unless stated. Salary bands come from our startup ecosystem guide, workspace costs from our districts and coworking guides, and professional fees from our business services guide. Treat these as a starting spreadsheet rather than a quote.

What Does It Cost to Run a One Person Business in Bangalore?

Roughly twenty five thousand to sixty thousand rupees a month excluding your own drawings, with a one off setup of twenty five thousand to a lakh. It is one of the cheapest cities in which to be a credible independent professional.

The monthly picture: a coworking desk or day passes at six to eighteen thousand, a CA retainer at three to eight thousand for a business this size, software and subscriptions at three to eight thousand, phone and internet at two to four thousand, and professional insurance and miscellaneous at three to eight thousand. Add travel and client entertainment as the variable line.

The setup cost depends on structure. A sole proprietorship costs almost nothing to begin but gives you no liability protection and looks less credible to corporate clients. An LLP or private limited at eight to twenty five thousand including government fees is what most consultants serving business clients should do, because those clients will ask, and GST registration is effectively mandatory the moment you invoice a company.

What Does a Five Person Startup Cost per Month?

Roughly eight to eighteen lakh rupees a month, of which eighty to ninety percent is salaries. Everything else is a rounding error by comparison, which is the single most important fact in early stage budgeting.

  • Salaries: roughly Rs 7 to 16 lakh a month. For a five person technical team, depending on seniority. Two mid level engineers, a senior engineer, a designer and one commercial hire lands in this range at Bengaluru market rates.
  • Employer statutory contributions. PF and, where applicable, ESI on top of gross salaries. Not optional and frequently omitted from first drafts of a budget.
  • Workspace: roughly Rs 30000 to 90000. Five coworking desks. This is the strongest argument for coworking at this size: no deposit, no lease, no fit out, and you can add a desk next month.
  • Compliance and professional: roughly Rs 8000 to 25000. CA retainer, amortised company secretary and audit provision. Small, and the thing most likely to be skipped and regretted.
  • Software and tools: roughly Rs 10000 to 35000. Cloud hosting, developer tooling, communication, design software, CRM. Cloud costs in particular can escalate quickly and deserve monitoring from month one.
  • Insurance: roughly Rs 3000 to 7000 a month. Group health cover amortised. Close to table stakes for hiring engineers in this city, so treat it as a cost of hiring rather than a benefit.
  • Capital, not monthly: laptops at Rs 3 to 7 lakh. Five machines at sixty thousand to one and a half lakh each. A real cash requirement in month one that monthly budgets miss entirely.

“At five people, ninety percent of your budget is salaries. Optimising your software spend is theatre. The only decisions that matter are who you hire and how fast.”

• On where founders waste attention

What Does a Twenty Person Company Cost?

Roughly thirty to seventy lakh rupees a month. At this size the cost structure changes shape: office, HR, finance and insurance become real line items rather than afterthoughts.

Salaries still dominate at roughly twenty five to sixty lakh a month, but the surrounding costs become material. Twenty coworking seats at twelve to thirty six lakh a year start to look expensive against conventional space, which is why the transition typically happens between thirty and fifty people. Conventional space brings a deposit of six to twelve months of rent, a fit out at eighteen hundred to four thousand rupees per square foot, and a lease of three to nine years, all of which is a significant capital and commitment decision.

New lines appear at this scale: group health insurance at six to fifteen thousand per employee per year, a payroll function either in house or outsourced at a hundred and fifty to six hundred per employee per month, statutory audit, POSH compliance, and administration and facilities. Budget roughly ten to fifteen percent above your salary line for everything that surrounds employing people, and more if you take your own office.

Which Costs Do Founders Forget?

  • The office deposit and fit out. Six to twelve months of rent as deposit, plus Rs 1800 to 4000 per square foot to build out. The single largest unexpected cash requirement in any office move.
  • Notice period overlap. With sixty to ninety day notice periods normal here, you will frequently pay a replacement and an outgoing employee simultaneously. Budget for it on every senior hire.
  • Employer statutory contributions. PF and ESI sit on top of gross salary, not inside it. First budgets routinely miss this and it is a meaningful percentage.
  • GST working capital. You pay GST on purchases and claim it back later. For a business buying services heavily, the timing gap is a genuine working capital requirement.
  • Group health insurance. Not legally required at small scale and effectively required to hire engineers in Bengaluru. Rs 6000 to 15000 per employee a year for base cover.
  • Laptops and equipment. Rs 60000 to 1.5 lakh per person, in month one, as capital. Easy to omit from a monthly budget and impossible to omit in practice.
  • Cloud cost growth. Hosting bills scale with usage and rarely downward. Set alerts in month one rather than discovering a five figure surprise in month nine.
  • Recruiter fees. 8 to 20 percent of first year compensation for roles you cannot fill through referrals, which for senior hires is a substantial one off.
  • Professional tax and small registrations. Individually trivial, collectively a nuisance, and each one penalised when missed. Your CA should be tracking them.

How Does Bangalore Compare With Other Indian Cities on Cost?

Office rent and engineering salaries are at or near the top nationally. Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai are cheaper on both. What Bengaluru gives you instead is talent depth, and for most businesses that is the decisive factor.

The honest comparison: you will pay more here for the same engineer than in Hyderabad or Pune, and grade A office space in the CBD is among the most expensive in the country. Cities competing for technology investment know this and market against it actively, and some large employers do locate expansion capacity elsewhere for exactly that reason.

The counter argument is availability at the senior end. If you need someone who has actually scaled a system, a team or a product, Bengaluru is the only Indian city where you have real choice, and the cost of a twelve month failed search comfortably exceeds a salary premium. The sensible pattern for larger companies is what several already do: senior and product functions here, scale operations wherever the arithmetic works better.

The Cost of Running a Business in Bangalore: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to run a small business in Bangalore?

Roughly Rs 25000 to 60000 a month for a solo consultant excluding own drawings, Rs 8 to 18 lakh a month for a five person startup including salaries, and Rs 30 to 70 lakh a month for a twenty person company. Setup is a one off Rs 25000 to 2 lakh.

What is the biggest cost of running a business in Bangalore?

Salaries, by a wide margin. At five people they typically account for 80 to 90 percent of monthly spend, which means hiring decisions matter far more to your budget than any other line item you could optimise.

How much does office space cost for a small company?

Coworking at roughly Rs 6000 to 18000 a desk a month or a managed office at Rs 12000 to 25000 a seat is usually right under thirty people. Conventional space runs Rs 45 to 250 per square foot a month by district plus a six to twelve month deposit and fit out at Rs 1800 to 4000 per square foot.

What costs do founders in Bangalore usually forget?

The office deposit and fit out, notice period overlap when replacing staff, employer PF and ESI contributions on top of gross salary, GST working capital timing, group health insurance, laptops as month one capital, cloud cost growth, recruiter fees and professional tax.

Do I have to provide health insurance to employees in Bangalore?

Not legally required at small scale, but group health cover at roughly Rs 6000 to 15000 per employee a year is effectively table stakes for hiring engineers in this city. Treat it as a cost of hiring rather than an optional benefit.

Is Bangalore expensive compared to other Indian cities for business?

Office rent and engineering salaries are at or near the highest in India, with Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai cheaper on both. What Bengaluru offers in exchange is the deepest senior talent pool in the country, which for most businesses outweighs the premium.

How much runway should a startup in Bangalore budget for?

Eighteen months rather than twelve. Hiring takes longer than expected because notice periods run sixty to ninety days, and B2B collections in India routinely stretch beyond agreed terms, so both sides of the cash cycle are slower than first plans assume.

What are the monthly compliance costs for a company in Bangalore?

Roughly Rs 3000 to 15000 a month for a CA retainer covering bookkeeping, GST, TDS and payroll compliance, plus Rs 15000 to 50000 a year for a company secretary and Rs 25000 to 2 lakh a year for statutory audit depending on size.

How much should I budget for software and tools per employee?

Roughly Rs 1500 to 6000 per employee a month across a typical stack of communication, design, CRM and developer tooling. Cloud hosting is separate and scales with usage, so set billing alerts from month one.

When should a company in Bangalore move from coworking to its own office?

Typically between thirty and fifty people, where conventional space starts winning on cost per seat. Below that, coworking avoids a six to twelve month deposit, a three to nine year lease and a substantial fit out bill, and lets you add desks as you grow.
