Shree Rama Prateeksha Bengaluru: classical dancers in costume performing a Ramayana dance ballet on stage

Classical dance, theatre and storytelling, one Sunday evening in Malleshwaram West.

“Some stories you have heard a hundred times. Then you see them danced, and it feels like the first time.”

• Tariq Sallam, The City 24/7

Shree Rama Prateeksha, the Ramayana dance ballet by Prabhath Kalavidaru, comes to Orion Mall at Brigade Gateway on Sunday, 1 November 2026 at 6.30pm. It blends classical dance, theatre and storytelling, and it's one of the longest-running productions of its kind in Bengaluru.

Here's why I'd go. Prabhath Kalavidaru have been bringing Indian epics to the stage for decades, and this production first opened in 1988. It has been performed more than 500 times since. It also lands on Kannada Rajyotsava, which makes for a rather lovely way to end the day: big colourful costumes, live storytelling and a bit of culture before Monday arrives.

What Is Shree Rama Prateeksha?

Shree Rama Prateeksha is a dance ballet based on Valmiki's Ramayana, told through the devotion of the people around Rama: Ahalya, Sita, Hanuman, Bharata and Sugreeva. The story follows Rama from his early years to the battle against Ravana. Its themes are dharma, compassion and faith, carried mostly through movement and music rather than dialogue.

Who Are Prabhath Kalavidaru?

Prabhath Kalavidaru are a Bengaluru performing arts group known for large, lavish dance productions of Indian epics. For Shree Rama Prateeksha, the music is by Pandit Vijaya Raghava Rao, the choreography is by Udupi Laxminarayanacharya and Hema Prabhath, and the direction is by T G Venkateshachar. If your parents grew up in Bengaluru, there's a decent chance they saw a Prabhath production as children.

Is It Worth Going If You Do Not Know the Ramayana Well?

Yes. The story is told visually, and earlier shows have carried English subtitles, so you won't be lost. In fact, it's an easy way to introduce children to the epic. Two hours of costumes, music and a monkey army does a better job than any textbook.

PLAN AHEAD

Mall performances fill up quickly on a holiday evening. Arrive by 6pm, eat early (the food court will be packed), and keep the kids on the aisle side so they can see.

How Do You Get to Orion Mall?

Orion Mall is at Brigade Gateway on Dr Rajkumar Road, between Rajajinagar and Malleshwaram West. The closest Green Line Metro stations are Mahalakshmi and Sandal Soap Factory, each a short auto ride away. The mall has its own parking, but on a festival evening the exit queue can take as long as a scene from the show, so the Metro is the calmer choice.
