LEARN KANNADA · CHAPTER 1

The Kannada You'll Use Every Single Day

Greetings, pronouns, the magic trio of beku, beDa and saaku, 18 everyday verbs and every question word you need for autos, shops and new friends.

schedule12 min read translate53 words and 12 ready-made sentences edit_noteBy Tariq Sallam, Founder

Kannada is one of India's classical languages, with a written history that goes back well over a thousand years, and it is the language of Karnataka. You can get by in Bengaluru without it. But the moment you say 'namaskaara' to the security uncle, or 'saaku' to the man piling a third ladle of sambar on your plate, the city treats you a little differently. Warmer. Like you live here.

This chapter is the toolkit: the small words that turn up in almost every conversation. No grammar lectures yet. Learn these, say them out loud, and use one new word a day on someone real.

HOW TO READ THE SPELLINGS
aa, ee, ooDoubled vowels are long. 'naanu' is nah-nu, 'neevu' is nee-vu.
T, D, LCapital letters are the hard sounds, with the tongue curled back: 'beDa', 'avaLu', 'ishTa'.
t, d, lSmall letters are the soft, flat sounds you already use in English.
neenu / neevuneenu is 'you' for friends and kids. neevu is 'you' for elders, strangers and anyone you want to be polite to. When in doubt, say neevu.

diversity_3Friendly or Polite? One Small Ending Decides

Kannada has two ways to say 'you', and the verb changes with it. With a friend or a child, use neenu and the plain verb. With anyone older, a stranger, a shopkeeper or your boss, use neevu and add the polite ending. It's the difference between 'come here' and 'please come here', and people notice.

Come here
