“Passing Toit in Indiranagar, you look wistfully into the wooden building, dreaming of being inside. Everyone in this city has done this.”
• The universal Bengaluru experience
Toit is a microbrewery and brewpub at 298, 100 Feet Road, Binnamangala Stage 1, Indiranagar, one of Bengaluru's first microbreweries, spread across three floors, serving house brewed craft beer and pub food, with valet parking and a permanent queue at weekends.
Toit is not just a brewery in Bengaluru, it is more or less the reason Bengaluru is a brewery city. It was among the first microbreweries here, it has been perfecting its brews for over a decade, and the model it proved out is now replicated across roughly every second building in this neighbourhood.
The honest question with a place this established is whether the reputation is doing the work. Having looked hard at the feedback, the answer is no. The beer is still what people come for, it is still well priced for craft, and the regulars are still regulars. The complaints are about the crowd and the service, not the brewing.
So this is the practical guide. Which beer, which food, how to handle the wait, what it costs and whether it is still the right choice in a city that now has fifty alternatives.
Quick Information
Everything you need before you join the queue, which you will, because everybody does.
What Is Toit in Indiranagar?
Toit Bangalore is one of the city's first microbreweries, located on 100 Feet Road in Indiranagar, offering house brewed beer, food and a distinctive brick walled three floor room. It was the first Toit to open, and the group now runs outlets in Mahadevapura, Pune and Mumbai.
The brewing programme is the point. Toit has spent over a decade experimenting with local ingredients and flavours, producing everything from a basmati rice inspired beer to a classic English style pale ale, all made with natural ingredients.
The room has a personality too, which is rarer than it should be. Regulars specifically mention the sense of humour visible on the walls and in the restrooms, alongside the ambience being the best among the city's microbreweries. Toit is strongly branded, and for once that is a compliment rather than a criticism.
Which Beer Should I Order at Toit?
Order the Toit Weiss. It is the most popular beer on the board, a cloudy, light hefeweizen with hints of banana and clove, and the Tintin Wit is a close second when it is available.
- Toit Weiss. The house hefeweizen and the default answer. Cloudy, light, banana and clove. If you order one beer here, order this.
- Tintin Wit. The witbier, and the beer regulars chase when it is on. Ask whether it is available before you order anything else.
- Basmati Blonde. A rice inspired blonde and one of the beers people specifically tell you not to leave without trying.
- Banger Lager. Clean, crisp and very sessionable. Bengaluru's own Benga-lager-U, which is a terrible pun and a good beer.
- The ragi lager. A Bohemian style lager brewed with finger millet. Local ingredient, clean bitterness, and the most Bengaluru beer on the list.
- Nitro Stout. The dark option. Alternate a dark and a light across an evening and the palate stays awake.
- Indian Pale Ale and Red Ale. The classics, done properly, for people who arrive knowing what they want.
- The cider. India's first cider made from 100 percent apple juice, with no concentrate, artificial sweeteners, syrups or added sugar. The right order for a non beer drinker.
- Seasonal brews. Including a mango amber ale available only in mango season. Always ask what is seasonal.
“Alternate dark and light across the evening. It resets the palate and it is the only defensible reason to order a fourth beer.”
• Advice from a Toit regular, adopted as policy
What Should I Eat at Toit?
Order the loaded potato skins and a pizza. The loaded potato skins are the single most named dish in the review record, and the pizzas, particularly the pepperoni, margherita and the Lamb Fig and Cheese, are the strongest part of the food menu.
- Loaded potato skins. Do not leave without trying these, according to essentially everybody. The beefy version has its own devoted following.
- Toit special pizza. Named alongside the Tintin as one of two must haves if you are in Bengaluru at all.
- Lamb, Fig and Cheese pizza. The most inventive pizza on the menu and a genuine favourite among regulars.
- Pepperoni and margherita pizzas. The reliable ones. A brewery that can make a proper margherita is a brewery that respects its oven.
- Pork chops. Called delicious by long standing reviewers and the heaviest thing worth ordering.
- Okra Podi Chips and Andhra Chilli Chicken. From the Permit Room section. South Indian bar snacks with craft beer is a better combination than it has any right to be.
One honest note on price. Craft beer at Toit is reasonably priced, but the food is costly, as it is in most of Bengaluru. You are getting good value on the thing they brew and standard Indiranagar pricing on the thing they cook.
How Long Is the Wait at Toit and How Do I Avoid It?
The wait at weekends is long and well documented, and pre booking is the only reliable answer. Huge rushes and waiting lines are a common sight, the place gets extremely crowded at weekends, and reviewers consistently advise booking in advance.
Even with three floors, a Friday or Saturday evening here is a queue. Toit spreads over three floors and reviewers still say table booking on weekends is advisable, which tells you the scale of the demand.
- Book ahead. The reservation link on the Toit website is the single most useful thing on this page.
- Weekday evenings. Still busy, but survivable. This is when regulars actually go.
- Early. Arriving at 6 pm on a weekend is a completely different experience from arriving at 9.
- Happy hour. Worth timing for, and the beer deals are real.
- Try Mahadevapura. The second Bengaluru outlet, same beer, considerably less chaos.
What Are the Downsides of Toit?
Service pace and crowd levels are the honest weaknesses. One detailed review describes having to call the server repeatedly and being told basic snacks would take twenty five minutes, concluding that it is a happening place but not one for sitting and enjoying a beer quietly.
That is a fair criticism and it is structural rather than fixable. A three floor brewery operating at capacity every weekend cannot also be a quiet room with attentive table service. You are choosing energy, and energy comes with a wait for your chips.
There is also positive feedback on service, including guests naming individual staff for attentive hospitality. As with most high volume venues, your experience depends heavily on which night you pick and how full the room is.
Is Toit Still the Best Brewery in Bangalore?
It is still the most iconic, and on beer alone it remains competitive with anything the city has produced since. Reviewers describe the craft beers as surprisingly well priced compared to many other breweries in the city, with the ambience rated the best among the microbreweries.
- For the beer. Still first rate, and still better value than most of the competition.
- For the atmosphere. Hard to beat. The room, the wood, the humour on the walls, the noise. This is what a brewpub should feel like.
- For a quiet drink. Absolutely not. Go somewhere else, and there are now dozens of somewhere elses.
- For a first visit to Bengaluru. Non negotiable. This is the brewery that made the city a beer city.
- For food led dining. The pizzas are good and the food is not the reason to come. Order beer first and eat around it.
My position after all of this: Bengaluru now has a great many breweries, several of them technically excellent, and Toit remains the one I would send a visitor to first. Book a table, order the Weiss, get the potato skins, and accept that the snacks will take a while.
